I What Are the Implications of Discovering Semi-Dirac Fermions in ZrSiS?

Click For Summary
The recent discovery of semi-Dirac fermions in ZrSiS, as reported in a paper by Shao et al. (2024), highlights their unique linear dispersion in one direction and quadratic behavior in the other two, suggesting mass characteristics along specific axes. This finding raises questions about the potential for similar phenomena in two-dimensional materials and their practical applications. The implications for topological metals and future research directions are significant, prompting discussions on prior theories related to semi-Dirac fermions. Researchers are encouraged to explore the theoretical frameworks that could support these findings. The ongoing dialogue aims to deepen understanding of this novel particle behavior.

Recent paper is making a buzz for having found evidence of semi-Dirac fermions in ZrSiS:
These fermions have a linear dispersion relation in one direction but quadratic in the other two (thus some news articles saying that it has mass only along some axes). Of course now the speculation is if one can do the same in 2D materials and find some applications. Anybody here has any insight on previous theories about semi-Dirac fermions? I leave this thread open for discussion of the paper.
