What are the physics problems involving velocity and acceleration?

Click For Summary
The discussion revolves around solving physics problems related to velocity and acceleration. The first problem involves calculating Ashley's average velocity after she runs 3.0 km in 4 minutes, with the correct formula being v = d/t, leading to an average velocity of 45 km/hour. The second problem concerns a train decelerating from 15 km/hr to a stop in one minute, requiring calculations for rate of acceleration, average velocity, and stopping distance. Participants emphasize the importance of including units in answers to avoid confusion. The thread highlights common pitfalls in physics problem-solving, particularly regarding unit conversions and clarity in answers.

Hi,

I'm having trouble with two physics problems.

- Ashley runs 3.0 km in 4.00 minutes. What is her average velocity? The answer is 45 but I can't figure out how to get it.

- A train moving at 15 km/hr takes 1 minute to come to a stop, find its rate of acceleration, its average velocity and the distance it takes to stop.

Rate of Acceleration
--------------------

15/60 = .25

Average Velocity
----------------

Need help finding this

Distance
--------

15/3.6 = 4.16

4.16 m/s
-------- = .069 m/s^2
60s

Thanks!

Use the equation
v=d/t
v=3/4

- A train moving at 15 km/hr takes 1 minute to come to a stop, find its rate of acceleration, its average velocity and the distance it takes to stop.

To find your average velocity, use the same equation as I used above (do it yourself this time so you learn.)

Thanks quantum!

I got 3/4 = .75 = .75*60 = 45 for the first one...

For the second one I got 15/60 = .25*60 = 15...

Thanks again!

metioguy04: Let me suggest you do something that quantum also did not do: Write the units with the answer!

You asserted that the answer was 45.

Well, no, the answer CAN'T be 45. The answer has to be a speed and 45 is a number, not a speed. That might seem picky but had you written 45 km/HOUR it would have been a heckuvalot easier to see what to do. Since you gave the time in minutes, the natural thing to do is to answer in km/min.

LOL! Looked right over that... Sorry.

Beams of electrons and protons move parallel to each other in the same direction. They ______. a. attract each other. b. repel each other. c. neither attract nor repel. d. the force of attraction or repulsion depends upon the speed of the beams. This is a previous-year-question of CBSE Board 2023. The answer key marks (b) as the right option. I want to know why we are ignoring Coulomb's force?
Thread 'Struggling to make relation between elastic force and height'
Hello guys this is what I tried so far. I used the UTS to calculate the force it needs when the rope tears. My idea was to make a relationship/ function that would give me the force depending on height. Yeah i couldnt find a way to solve it. I also thought about how I could use hooks law (how it was given to me in my script) with the thought of instead of having two part of a rope id have one singular rope from the middle to the top where I could find the difference in height. But the...
I treat this question as two cases of Doppler effect. (1) When the sound wave travels from bat to moth Speed of sound = 222 x 1.5 = 333 m/s Frequency received by moth: $$f_1=\frac{333+v}{333}\times 222$$ (2) When the sound wave is reflected from moth back to bat Frequency received by bat (moth as source and bat as observer): $$f_2=\frac{333}{333-v}\times f_1$$ $$230.3=\frac{333}{333-v}\times \frac{333+v}{333}\times 222$$ Solving this equation, I get ##v=6.1## m/s but the answer key is...
