SUMMARY

The particle density of fine aggregate as defined by ASTM C128 is calculated using the formula: (dry weight of aggregate) / (weight of pycnometer filled with water + saturated surface dry sample weight - weight of pycnometer filled with water and aggregate). The term (weight of pycnometer filled with water + saturated surface dry sample weight - weight of pycnometer filled with water and aggregate) represents the weight of water displaced by the aggregate. It is crucial to ensure that the numerator reflects the "weight of pycnometer with only saturated surface dry sample" for accurate calculations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of ASTM C128 standards
  • Knowledge of pycnometer usage in density measurements
  • Familiarity with the concept of saturated surface dry (SSD) condition
  • Basic principles of bulk density calculations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research ASTM C128 for detailed methodologies and standards
  • Learn about the use of pycnometers in measuring specific gravity
  • Explore the concept of saturated surface dry (SSD) in aggregate testing
  • Investigate bulk density versus particle density in material science
USEFUL FOR

Civil engineers, materials scientists, and quality control professionals involved in aggregate testing and concrete mix design will benefit from this discussion.

I was told that the bulk density of SP Gr of ASTM C128 for fine aggregate is (dry weight of aggragrate)/ ( weight of pycnometer filled with water + saturated surface dry of sample - weight of pycnometer filled with water and aggragrate )...What does the ( weight of pycnometer filled with water + saturated surface dry of sample - weight of pycnometer filled with water and aggragrate ) represent ?

This represents the weight of the water displaced by the aggregate (plus the weight of the pycnometer). Notice my changes in red above. Note also that the numerator in your calculation should also be "weight of pycnometer with only saturated surface dry sample."

ASTM C128 actually gives the "particle density" of the aggregate.
