What happens if an Alcubierre warp drive fails?

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the implications of a failure in an Alcubierre warp drive, particularly what occurs if the drive is deactivated or destroyed. Participants explore the effects on the vessel's motion, time dilation, and the mechanics of the warp bubble, touching on theoretical aspects of faster-than-light travel.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether the vessel would stop or continue coasting if the warp drive is shut down, and how time dilation would be affected at such high speeds.
  • Another participant asserts that the ship would simply stop when the warp drive is turned off, referencing a commonly held belief about warp speeds.
  • A third participant humorously notes the importance of inertial dampeners in the context of warp drive operation.
  • One participant speculates on the nature of acceleration under a warp drive, asking if constant acceleration would occur and if deceleration could be instantaneous.
  • Another participant suggests that once the Alcubierre spacetime bubble is created, it would continue to coast at its original velocity without needing maintenance, but raises uncertainty about the implications of modifying the static solution.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is no consensus on the effects of a warp drive failure, with multiple competing views presented regarding the vessel's motion and the nature of the warp bubble.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the mechanics of the Alcubierre drive, particularly regarding the maintenance of the warp bubble and the implications of its deactivation. The discussion includes assumptions about the behavior of spacetime and the effects of high velocities that are not fully resolved.

If the warp drive is shut down either by its destruction or just plain turning it off, what happens? Does the vessel stop? Continue coasting forward? If so how would the time dilation factor at speeds several thousand times the speed of light?

Oh, come on everyone knows you can't go past warp 10, and everytime it shuts down the ship just stops.

Let's just hope the inertial dampeners are working !

So would one be constantly accelerating under such a drive, but then be able to decelerate instantly?

I *think* that once you have created the Alcubierre spacetime, nothing physically needs to be done to maintain it. That is, the bubble will continue coasting with whatever velocity (with respect to distant observers) it had originally. The only thing is you will no longer be able to stop.

Although, the Alcubierre solution is static, so it's not entirely clear what would happen if you tried to modify it.
