In summary, there is a mysterious dirty rain falling in Eastern Washington and Oregon, possibly caused by dust storms in Africa. This has resulted in intense sunrises and purple-tinged clouds. There is speculation that the substance in the rain could be ash, similar to the recent Mt. Hood eruption. In addition, there have been recent animal attacks in Oregon, prompting the installation of owl warning signs designed by Rachel Maddow.

I've no idea what the cause is but it fell over a wide area.

We've had some very intense sunrises in the last week so it looks like something has been in the air. My 9yo girl said the clouds looked purple today when I picked her up from school.

Thanks Phinds. The contrast between you gloomy words and that picture of your goofy dog made me laugh and laugh.

I didn't notice anything where I live (near Seattle). This isn't surprising, as we've had a lot of rain this week, so anything in the air got washed out pretty quickly. @nsaspook, what peak is that in your pictures? It looks like one of the Cascade volcanoes -- maybe Mt. Hood?

1. What causes dirty rain in the Northwest?

Dirty rain in the Northwest is caused by a combination of human activities and natural phenomena. The main contributors are air pollution from industries and transportation, as well as dust and ash particles from wildfires and volcanic eruptions.

2. How does dirty rain affect the environment?

Dirty rain can have significant negative impacts on the environment. It can harm plants and animals, damage crops, and pollute water sources. It can also contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain, which can further harm ecosystems and human health.

3. Is dirty rain harmful to human health?

Yes, dirty rain can be harmful to human health. The pollutants in dirty rain can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, and exacerbate respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. Long-term exposure to dirty rain can also increase the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

4. Can we prevent or reduce dirty rain in the Northwest?

Yes, there are steps that can be taken to prevent or reduce dirty rain in the Northwest. These include reducing emissions from industries and vehicles, controlling wildfires, and implementing air pollution regulations. Additionally, individuals can reduce their own carbon footprint by using public transportation, conserving energy, and supporting environmentally-friendly policies.

5. How can we clean up dirty rain?

Cleaning up dirty rain is a complex and ongoing process. It requires reducing pollution sources, as well as implementing methods such as rainwater harvesting and treatment to remove pollutants from the water before it is used for drinking or other purposes. Additionally, restoring and protecting natural ecosystems can help to mitigate the effects of dirty rain on the environment.
