What is it that makes Google so popular? Is it its simplicity? A couple of years ago I was always using Excite, but now every single person I know uses Google..

anyone who uses a different search engine?

I always use Yahoo. I think it's much better than Google, but I guess it's up to personal preference.

I use google almost all the time... Factors contributing to that?

Well, it is very simple, the page comes up quick, because there arent many graphics, and it gives you a really cool useless number of how many seconds it took to process my request. It also says on the bottom (searching XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX pages in the WWW, which i also think is really kool. I dunno, just the little things i guess.

Google almost assuredly produces the highest-quality results. Its PageRank algorithm is the best in the business. In addition, its clean appearance and quick searching make it very effective to use.

I should note, Mentat, that Yahoo! uses Google's search engine. All you're doing when you use Yahoo! is using Google, while wasting your time looking at Yahoo!'s ads and graphics.

If you look at the bottom of a 'Yahoo' search you see the following statement:
Search Technology provided by Google

So you are sort of using Google anyway...

I use Google all the time and it is FAR better than all the others, which of late I have stopped using as Google is just so much better... (which of course contradicts my statement above! )

By the way, Have you tried typing into Google 'weapons of mass destruction' and hitting the 'I feel lucky button'??

You still use netscape!

Get with the times - firebird is all the rage - www.mozilla.org

Also, netscape isn't a search engine, its a browser. If you go to netscape.com they do have a search engine, but it is "Powered by Google"

Go easy on our lovely Gale maybe she has one of those brainy autonomous computers?

Thanks for the defense monique...
yes dduardo, i find it terribly difficult to type in that constricting address bar...

Its a virus or something. If you want to talk about how dumb my computer is hear this...

-Our content advisor is so messed up. It won't allow you to veiw any pages at all unless you disable it. To disable it, you can't just click the disable button and type the password, first you have click the settings button, type password, hit cancel, then you can disable.

-to use aim, first i have to fake sign on first, to sort of warm it up. I click sign on, but right before it signs on, i hit cancel. Then i sign on for real. Other wise the content advisors pops up and freezing things. If i fake sign on first, it pops up, and goes away.

-Everytime you I am someone (or they you) a new content advisor message pops up, you can just hit cancel, but still annoying.

-You can't have more than one internet window open and surf. Only way to surf is to disable content adivisor. Content advisor will only stay disabled for one window at a time. Everytime you open a window, you need to disable, you can't just disable once a day or anything simple like that.

-You can't click on the file or edit buttons right away, you need to warm them up first. You have to mouse over them, without clicking, and hold it there a few seconds, and then you can click on them. Otherwise computer freaks and freezes.

-Can't hardly use any search engines. We have some virus.

-Can't use the virus scanner software because we can't use the internet right because of the content adivisor.

These are just the most annoying of my problems. Probably not even all the worst.

But to add to the topic of the thread... yeah google is the simplest. Plus i love to play google-whack and google-fight.

Why don't you just reinstall it all together? Go to start, settings, software, uninstall.

I'm sorry Gale17. I didn't know how much micrsoft trouble you where having. Here is how you disable content advisor for good:

1) Click on Start and choose Run.

2) Type in RegEdit and select OK.

3) Now click on the little plus sign to the left of H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

4) Continue to drill down, always clicking on the plus sign at the left of the named key, through Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version and Policies.

5) Now click on the Ratings folder.

6) In the right pane of the RegEdit window, you'll see an icon called Key. Click on it and press Delete.

7) Next, choose Registry and then Exit to exit RegEdit. You've just deleted your original Content Advisor password.

8) Restart the computer and run Internet Explorer again.

9) Choose View and then Internet Options (or Options for version 3.x). For IE 5 or greater, Click on Tools, Internet Options.

10) Click on the Content tab and click on Disable. When asked for a password, don't enter anything; just click on OK. This will disable Content Advisor because there's no longer a password.

If you need any additional help, just post.

Yeah... kind of sounds like one of those joke things... If it weren't happening to me, i'd laugh too

I'm pretty sure you can't. Its just a feature of internet explorer. I think if we could just uninstall the dumb content advisor my father (some sort of engineer... computer guy, builds gov't planes or something) would just do it. We've actually redone the entire system once already because of the same problem. Although, the first time this happened, it wasn't quite as bad. Now when ever i use the computer i feel like i have (damn i forget the word, just had it... lost it) but that mental disorder where you do like weird random things in order all the time otherwise you freak out... yeah that's me and my pc...

Ok, so dduardo is my new best friend. I love you so much. I think I'm going to cry. The internet hasn't been this easy to use in... oh god... It's so wonderful.

  • #26
Oooo, I got a new best friend

Gale17, you wouldn't guess where I got the instructions to disable content advisor.

As I also say, when in doubt google it.

  • #27
too bad i still can't use google...

seriously though... you should see my paranoia. I can't believe i can just click on what i want without any weird freaky stuff first. haha... whenever i used to accidently close the window i'd curse and be mad cause i'd have to jump through so many loops again. But now, i just click and its back open. Its amazing. I can't believe it. I keep thinking my computer is going to freeze on me.

I just showed my sister. She jumped up and down and got all excited. Honestly, this is such a big deal. Oh my god i love you.

Hahaaa! Looking at the picture I guess he loves you too Gale :P I was wondering, why does the avatar work and it doesn't??

Well, you can always switch to Linux if you continue to have problems with Microsoft.

Linux is the fastest growing operating system in the world. Just recently SUSE linux out sold the new Apple OS X 10.3 Panther on amazon UK.

check out my desktop

Linux is also a lot more stable, secure and faster. You don't even need an antivirus it is so good..

That avatar is really deceiving, even knowing its you I thought: whoa! Gale knows a lot about Lunix!

  • #32
I use Google most of the time.

But to have different info I use: http://alltheweb.com/

I believe both receive most of their links from 'the open directory project' (http://dmoz.org/). When you have a webpage just put it on http://dmoz.org/ and soon almost all search engines will display your page.

Can you post that background again w/o your picture and your GIMF box?

I would love to put the pic on my desktop!
