What is the magnitude of upthrust force on a metal ball immersed in water?

SUMMARY

The magnitude of the upthrust force acting on a metal ball immersed in water is 0.2 N. This conclusion is derived from the difference in weight of the ball when measured in air (1 N) versus when it is fully submerged in water (0.8 N). The upthrust force, also known as buoyant force, is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the ball, which in this case results in a reduction of 0.2 N in the apparent weight of the ball.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Archimedes' principle
  • Basic knowledge of forces and weight measurement
  • Familiarity with buoyancy concepts
  • Ability to perform simple calculations involving weight and force
NEXT STEPS
  • Study Archimedes' principle in detail
  • Explore the concept of buoyant force and its applications
  • Learn about the relationship between density and buoyancy
  • Investigate the effects of different fluids on buoyancy
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, educators teaching principles of buoyancy, and anyone interested in fluid mechanics and the behavior of objects in fluids.

a metal ball weighs 1 N in air and 0.8 N when totally immersed in water. find magnitue of upthrust force.

How do you explain the fact that the ball weighs 0.2N less in the water than it does in air?

it's pretty clear 1-0.8=0.2N
