What's the relation between chemical compositions and physical properties?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the relationship between the chemical composition of materials and their physical properties, exploring whether this relationship is one of parity or subordination. The context includes considerations for sorting recycled materials based on chemical composition as part of a PhD project.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question whether the relationship between chemical composition and physical properties is one of parity or subordination.
  • One participant indicates that their inquiry is related to their PhD project, focusing on sorting recycled materials by chemical composition rather than traditional physical and mechanical properties.
  • Another participant expresses curiosity about the advantages of using chemical composition as a sorting criterion compared to traditional methods.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have not reached a consensus on the nature of the relationship between chemical composition and physical properties, and multiple viewpoints are present regarding the implications for sorting criteria in recycling.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the assumptions underlying the proposed relationships or the specific definitions of "peering relation" and "relation of subordination." There are also unresolved questions about the effectiveness of new sorting criteria.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be of interest to researchers and students in materials science, recycling technology, and those exploring the interplay between chemical composition and physical properties in various applications.

What are your thoughts on this? Is this for schoolwork?

nope, it's about my PhD project, we are now starting sorting of the recycled materials based on chemical composition, the traditional sorting criteria is mostly based on the physical and mechanical properties, I am thinking of the relation of this hierarchy, and wondering why is a new sorting criteria advantageous or specific over others.

Okay, I've got it now. PhD work has nothing to do with school. Check.

Can you post your outline for your PhD work?
