Homework Statement

Problem in evaluating a single variable equation

Homework Equations

(10 + x)/ (40+x) * 100 = 60

The Attempt at a Solution

(1)[/B]
(10 + x)/ (40+x) * 100 = 60
1000 + 100x = 2400 + 60x
100x -60 x = 2400-1000
40x = 2300
x= fractional value
(2)
However if i solve it using:
(10 + x) /(40 +x) = 60/100
(10 + x)/(40 + x) = 3/5
50 + 5x = 120 + 3x
2x= 70
x = 35 (integer value)
Some body please guide me what's wrong in my first calculation i.e. (1).

2400 - 1000 is not equal to 2300.
