SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a capstone project involving two 24V wheelchair motors that require skid steer control, utilizing separate handles for each motor to manage forward and reverse speeds. The team seeks a suitable speed controller that allows for direct wiring of the battery and motors for simplicity. They plan to use two 100amp 12V batteries in series and suspect the motors are brushed DC, although they are considering the option of using a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor with an integrated controller due to the lack of information on the discontinued motors.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of skid steer control mechanisms
  • Familiarity with 24V wheelchair motors
  • Knowledge of speed controllers for DC motors
  • Basic electrical wiring concepts
NEXT STEPS
  • Research suitable speed controllers for 24V brushed DC motors
  • Explore options for Brushless DC motors with integrated controllers
  • Investigate wiring configurations for dual motor setups
  • Learn about battery management systems for series configurations
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and hobbyists involved in robotics or electric vehicle projects, particularly those working with motor control systems and battery configurations.

Hey, so for a capstone project we are working with 2 24V wheel chair motors. and the sponsor wants us to make it operate like a skid steer (two separate handles, one for each motor, controlling the forward and reverse speeds). Me and my group being a mechanical engineers, we are not so knowledgeable on these kind of electric controls. was wondering if anyone knew of a speed controller that would utilize a lever style, and would also allow us to wire the battery and motor straight to it for simplicity. any advice would be awesome, thanks.

NOTE: We are planning on using 2 100amp 12v batteries in series to power this motor. At this point we think they are brushed DC motors, but will let you know if we find out different. these are discontinued motors and the manufactures don't have much info on them.

A BLDC motor with integrated controller should do it. They come in many sizes, voltages, and prices. Google them.q:welcome:
