Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests recommendations for an introductory Number Theory book that is not overly complex but still rigorous and proof-based.
  • Another participant seeks clarification on whether "introductory" refers to undergraduate-level material or merely a general exposure to the subject.
  • A third participant expresses uncertainty about the distinction between undergraduate-level material and general exposure, emphasizing the desire for a general understanding of Number Theory.
  • One suggestion is made to explore a website for a variety of books on the topic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to have differing interpretations of what constitutes "introductory" material, indicating a lack of consensus on the specific level of complexity desired in the book recommendations.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not clarify the specific characteristics that differentiate undergraduate-level texts from those intended for general exposure, leaving this distinction unresolved.

Hi,

I was wondering what introductory book to Number Theory for self study would you recommend? I don't need one that is too streched, just one that will give me a flavor of number theory.

Thanks in advance!

introductory as in undergrads level or just for some exposure?

I am not sure what you exactly mean by that. But what i am looking for is something that will give me a general idea of what number theory is about. Something that is not too difficult to follow, but rigorous at the same time; that is almost 100% proof based.

I am not sure what exactly would be the difference between "introductory as in undergrads level " and "just for some exposure".
