Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the dilemma of choosing between a major in Physics or Mechanical Engineering, with participants exploring the implications of each choice in relation to future career aspirations, particularly in the context of invention and research. The conversation touches on theoretical concepts, practical applications, and personal interests in specific scientific ideas.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire to theorize and apply those theories practically, questioning whether Mechanical Engineering or Physics is more suitable for their goals.
  • Another participant suggests considering Electrical Engineering as an alternative, prompting further inquiry into the original poster's interests.
  • Specific interests mentioned include understanding levitation, developing reactionless crafts, addressing time dilation, finding eco-friendly fuels, and creating gravity domes for planets.
  • Concerns are raised about the feasibility of some ideas, with one participant stating that many proposed concepts may contradict established laws of physics.
  • There is a suggestion that pursuing a PhD in Physics could be beneficial for research into gravity, despite the competitive nature of academic careers.
  • Another participant discusses the balance between pursuing fundamental science and the stability of a professional career, noting that many career paths may not align with niche research interests.
  • One participant contemplates a dual approach of majoring in engineering for job stability while minoring in physics to keep their research interests alive.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the feasibility of certain scientific ideas and the best path forward for the original poster. There is no consensus on which major is definitively better suited for their aspirations, and multiple competing perspectives on career stability versus research interests are presented.

Contextual Notes

Some ideas discussed are considered to be against the laws of physics, raising questions about the limitations of current scientific understanding. The conversation reflects a range of assumptions about the nature of physics and engineering careers, as well as the potential for interdisciplinary approaches.

Im not sure. I wanted to get a Ph.D in physics so I can do my own research but I’m wondering if that's the path I should take if its alignment with my goals. Like I said I am stuck between Physics, mechanical engineering or engineering physics.
Again, the most basic goal is Physics, first for undergraduate degree. You will need to decide yourself how to specify and choose courses (Physics, Engineering, others) as you go. If you cannot make more specific choices along the way, you will remain lost.
