Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the types of smiles and their associated stress levels, specifically focusing on rewarding, affiliation, and dominant smiles. Participants explore the implications of these smiles in social contexts, with references to emotional responses and cultural representations.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants categorize smiles into three types: rewarding, affiliation, and dominant, with the dominant smile being identified as the most stressful based on tests.
  • One participant expresses a personal preference for the dominant smile, suggesting a subjective view on its impact.
  • Another participant introduces a different type of "smile" by referencing a grimace from the movie The Right Stuff, implying that not all facial expressions fit neatly into the established categories.
  • There is a discussion about the interpretation of the grimace, with one participant suggesting it aligns with the affiliation smile, while another interprets it as a reaction to a stressful situation.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the categorization of smiles or their stress levels, with multiple interpretations and perspectives presented throughout the discussion.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the emotional impact of different smiles are not fully explored, and the definitions of the smile types may vary among participants.

There are three kinds of smiles, rewarding (indicating encouragement), affiliation (indicating relatability), and dominant (condescending).
Tests have shown the condescending ones are the most stressful.
