Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the utilization of desalination plants as a potential solution to the global water crisis, particularly in regions like Africa. Participants explore the reasons for the limited large-scale application of desalination technologies despite their development and existing implementations.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question why desalination is not applied on a large scale, particularly in factories, to address water shortages.
  • Others point out that desalination plants are already in use on a large scale in countries like Australia and in the Middle East, particularly in wealthy nations.
  • There is a concern raised about the high costs associated with desalination, which may limit its feasibility in poorer countries.
  • Some participants suggest that there are ongoing projects aimed at making low-cost desalination accessible to a broader population.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the extent of desalination plant usage globally, with some asserting that they are widely used while others emphasize the limitations faced by poorer nations. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approaches to make desalination more accessible.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference various sources and examples, but there are no consensus definitions or agreements on the economic feasibility of desalination in different regions.

Why no desalination plants ?

Many parts of the world face water crisis today ( especially Africa ) . This can be avoided if the sea water ( which is saline ) is made useful by desalinating it. many desalination techniques have been developed but why is not desalination applied on large scale...i.e. in factories and then send that desalinated water for use ?

Desalination plants are used on a large scale.
i.e. in Australia.

One should do some research on the desalination industry. There are numerous plants in the MiddleEast, particularly the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia, those nations with considerable wealth/resources, as well as other parts of the world.

wealthy nations only...can't it be done in poor countries using...u know kinda less wealth

There are projects to bring low cost desalination to the masses.
All this is an easy google away.
