SUMMARY

Cosine and secant functions share the same sign across all four quadrants due to their definitions in relation to the unit circle. Specifically, cosine is positive in the first and fourth quadrants, while secant, being the reciprocal of cosine, also remains positive in these quadrants. The discussion highlights that cosine's even function property, where cos(-x) = cos(x), ensures that both functions maintain consistent signs in their respective quadrants.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of trigonometric functions and their properties
  • Familiarity with the unit circle and quadrant definitions
  • Knowledge of even and odd functions in mathematics
  • Basic skills in graphing trigonometric functions
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore the properties of even and odd functions in trigonometry
  • Study the unit circle and its implications for trigonometric ratios
  • Learn about the reciprocal identities of trigonometric functions
  • Investigate the behavior of trigonometric functions in different quadrants
USEFUL FOR

Students studying trigonometry, educators teaching mathematical concepts, and anyone interested in understanding the behavior of trigonometric functions across different quadrants.

Identifying the signs of ratio in four quadrants. It turns out that -ive trignometric identity will be negative but not for cos and sec. But why?

if you mean why cos(-x)=cos(x)

is because if you draw x clockwise,it lies in the 4th quadrant and where is cos(x) +ve?
