Why is a grating preferred over a single slit for diffraction patterns?

While a single slit will create a diffraction pattern having multiple ones from the same source will make it more visible, the coherent light waves with interfere to give you a pattern of light and dark regions if projected onto a white surface. At least that would be my thinking.
 
A single slit gives a broad pattern for each wavelength.
A grating give narrow lines.
