Will a 9V electromagnet work with a battery of a lesser voltage

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around whether a 12V electromagnet can operate effectively with a 9V battery. It explores the implications of using a lower voltage power source on the performance of the electromagnet and the potential effects on other components in the circuit.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants assert that a 12V electromagnet will work with a 9V battery, but it will produce a weaker magnetic field.
  • Others suggest that while it might work, the functionality of other electronics in the circuit could be compromised at the lower voltage.
  • A participant clarifies that if the electromagnet is part of a circuit with additional components, such as transistors, those components may not operate correctly with a lower voltage supply.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the effectiveness of using a 9V battery with a 12V electromagnet, with some agreeing on the reduced performance while others highlight potential issues with circuit functionality.

Contextual Notes

There are assumptions regarding the simplicity of the circuit and the specific components involved, which may affect the overall performance and behavior of the electromagnet and other electronics.

Yes it will, but as you might expect, it produces a weaker magnetic field.

Well, it might work. If you have other electronics in the circuit they may not function at the lower voltage.

Yes Drak that is true, I am assuming OP meant just a simple power source supplied to an electromagnet.
If the electromaget is somewhere in a circuit which includes other components, transistors or so, they may not work with a lower power supply setup, and the circuit would not function as intended.
