Writing lectures about physics (equation editing software)

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the use of LaTeX for writing equations in academic settings. Participants highlight that LaTeX is a markup language rather than a standalone program, requiring an editor and a compiler specific to the operating system. Additionally, common word processors like Microsoft Word and presentation software such as PowerPoint are mentioned as viable alternatives for creating equations. The consensus suggests that while LaTeX is powerful, many professionals successfully use other tools for their manuscript and presentation needs.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of LaTeX markup language
  • Familiarity with LaTeX editors and compilers
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word's equation editor
  • Experience with PowerPoint's built-in equation features
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore LaTeX editors such as Overleaf or TeXShop
  • Learn how to compile LaTeX documents on different operating systems
  • Investigate advanced features of Microsoft Word's equation editor
  • Study PowerPoint's equation editing capabilities for presentations
USEFUL FOR

Academics, researchers, and educators looking to enhance their document preparation skills, particularly in writing and presenting equations effectively.

Note that this is not a program but more of a markup language. You will need an editor and a compiler depending on your operating system.

Don't all word processors do that nowadays? I know of many people who type their manuscripts for publication using Word. I write my presentation using PowerPoint and use the equation editor built in there.

So if those are good enough for the professionals...
