Does an R2S turbocharger,2 stage turbocharger and twin turbo mean the same

In summary, the conversation discusses different types of turbocharging, including 2 stage turbo, twin turbo/biturbo, and R2s turbo. The participants also clarify that there is no standard nomenclature for these terms. 2 stage turbocharging refers to having two turbos, an LP and a HP, in series. Twin turbo/biturbo can either mean two stages of turbocharging in series or two separate single stage turbos in parallel, such as in the case of a V engine. The example of BMW diesels is given, where two single stage turbos are used for different engine speeds. The R2s turbo is a compound turbo in a single package, similar to the setup seen on the LeMans Audi

does the r2s turbo , a 2 stage turbo and a twin turbo mean the same ...well my idea of a 2 stage turbo is that where compression of air takes place in 2 stages ..so does it consist of 2 compressors?

There is no standard nomenclature with this.

2 Stage turbocharging is fairly clear - There are two turbos an LP and a HP (in series). There will be some measure of bypass and control.
Twin turbo/biturbo can either mean 2 stages of turbo charging (series), or two separate single stage turbos (parallel).

can you elaborate when you say 2 separate 2ingle stage turbos i.e parallel?

  • #4
Say on a V engine. You could have one large turbo feeding both banks, or Two identical turbos, one to feed each bank.

A good example of twin single stage turbo engines are BMW diesels. These feature a small turbo which prevents turbo lag at low engine RPM, along with a larger turbo for higher RPM

when there are 2 turbo's ,they are 2 stage na ..how do you still call it twin single stage ?

The R2s is basically a "compound turbo" in a single package where typical compound turbo setups run two separate turbochargers.

Echo.

Saw one on the LeMans audi testing at the shuttle landing facility two weeks ago.

1. What is an R2S turbocharger?

An R2S turbocharger is a type of turbocharger that has two stages of compression, making it more efficient than a single-stage turbocharger. It is commonly used in high-performance vehicles to increase engine power and torque.

2. What is a 2 stage turbocharger?

A 2 stage turbocharger, also known as a twin-scroll turbocharger, is a type of turbocharger that uses two separate exhaust gas inlets to drive the turbine, providing more efficient and faster turbo response compared to a single-scroll turbocharger.

3. Is a twin turbo the same as a 2 stage turbocharger?

No, a twin turbo is not the same as a 2 stage turbocharger. A twin turbo refers to a setup where there are two identical turbochargers, one for each bank of cylinders, while a 2 stage turbocharger refers to a single turbocharger with two stages of compression.

4. What are the benefits of using an R2S turbocharger or 2 stage turbocharger?

The main benefit of using an R2S turbocharger or 2 stage turbocharger is increased engine performance. By compressing the air in two stages, more air can be forced into the engine, resulting in more power and torque. Additionally, these turbochargers are more efficient and provide faster response compared to single-stage turbochargers.

5. Can any car use an R2S turbocharger, 2 stage turbocharger, or twin turbo?

No, not all cars can use these types of turbochargers. They are typically found in high-performance or sports cars that have engines designed to handle the increased power and stress of forced induction. Retrofitting a car with an R2S turbocharger, 2 stage turbocharger, or twin turbo can also be complex and expensive, so it is not recommended for every car.
