Pseudogap and phonon gap. Does phonon (pseudo)gap exist?

In summary, there are pseudogaps present in superconductors and metals (semimetals). There have been experiments aimed at finding analogues to these pseudogaps in the phonon spectrum. It is believed that the pseudogap T* may be connected to changes in the phonon spectrum in certain directions. Similar questions have also been raised for superconducting Tc. The presence of a pseudogap in the phonon spectrum is supported by NMR experiments on cuprate materials, suggesting that it may be remnants of the antiferromagnetic background of the parent material.

We all know that there exist pseudogap in superconductors and in metals (semimetals).

Were there the experiments, aimed to find gaps analogues to pseudogap in phonon spectrum?

Is pseudogap T* is connected with some change in phonon spectrum in some direction?

The same question for superconducting Tc.

Why should there be a pseudogap in the phonon spectrum? We know there are no pseudogap in most conventional superconductors.

The pseudogap in present in the spin channel of the cuprates. See NMR experiments on this family of material. So there are indications that this pseudogap could be remnants of the antiferromagnetic background of the parent material.

FAQ: Pseudogap and phonon gap. Does phonon (pseudo)gap exist?

1. What is a pseudogap?

A pseudogap is a phenomenon observed in certain materials at low temperatures, where there is a partial suppression of the electronic density of states near the Fermi level. It is not a true gap in the energy spectrum, but rather a dip in the density of states, leading to a reduction in the number of available electronic states.

2. What is a phonon gap?

A phonon gap is a gap in the vibrational density of states of a material, caused by the presence of a periodic lattice structure. It is a result of phonon-phonon interactions, and is different from an electronic gap, which is caused by the interactions of electrons.

3. Is the phonon gap the same as the pseudogap?

No, the phonon gap and the pseudogap are two distinct phenomena. The phonon gap is related to the vibrations of the lattice, while the pseudogap is related to the electronic density of states. However, in some materials, the two gaps may overlap or interact with each other.

4. How do scientists study the phonon and pseudogap?

Scientists use various techniques such as neutron scattering, Raman spectroscopy, and inelastic X-ray scattering to study the phonon and pseudogap in materials. These techniques allow them to measure the energy spectra and density of states of the material, providing insights into the nature of the gaps.

5. Does the phonon or pseudogap actually exist?

Yes, both the phonon and pseudogap have been observed in various materials and have been extensively studied by scientists. Their existence has been supported by experimental evidence, and they play important roles in understanding the properties and behavior of materials at low temperatures.
