Order parameter in quasicrystals

In summary, an order parameter in quasicrystals is a mathematical quantity that measures the degree of long-range order in a quasicrystal structure. It is determined through experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction and neutron scattering, and is significant in understanding the unique structure and properties of quasicrystals. The order parameter can change under different conditions and is different from that in traditional crystals due to the non-periodic nature of quasicrystals.

No, the ones with five or 10 fold symmetry, the last Nobel prize was given for.

well, even ordinary crystals break rotational symmetry. what quasicrystals break is the strict periodic lattice.

I just saw the chemistry nobel prize press release. thanks for the info.

What is an order parameter in quasicrystals?

An order parameter in quasicrystals is a measure of the degree of long-range order in a quasicrystal structure. It is a mathematical quantity that characterizes the arrangement of atoms or particles in a quasicrystal, and can help to distinguish between different types of quasicrystals.

How is the order parameter determined in quasicrystals?

The order parameter in quasicrystals is determined through various experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering, and scanning tunneling microscopy. These techniques allow scientists to analyze the arrangement and symmetry of atoms in a quasicrystal and calculate the order parameter.

What is the significance of the order parameter in quasicrystals?

The order parameter is significant because it provides insight into the structure and properties of quasicrystals, which have unique and complex geometries that are not found in traditional crystals. Understanding the order parameter can help scientists to better understand the behavior and potential applications of quasicrystals.

Can the order parameter change in quasicrystals?

Yes, the order parameter in quasicrystals can change under different conditions such as changes in temperature or pressure. This can affect the long-range order and symmetry of the quasicrystal, and can also impact its physical properties.

How does the order parameter in quasicrystals compare to traditional crystals?

The order parameter in quasicrystals is different from that in traditional crystals because quasicrystals have non-periodic, aperiodic structures while traditional crystals have periodic structures. This results in different types of order parameters and different methods for determining and analyzing them.
