You want a Lewis Dot Structure of AgNO3, not just NO3-.

  • #3
I don't think so - question asks for structure of nitrate ion, and in general structure of nitrate ion doesn't depend on the counterion.

temaire: resonant structure should have localized charge. How many valence electrons on N?

I think I see where I went wrong. My diagram has 12 valence electrons for N, while I'm supposed to have only 8. But how do resonant structures have localized charges? Shouldn't they have delocalized charges?

  • #5
No, delocalized charge is effect of switching between resonant strutures. Charge is localized in any individual structure, but as molecule switches between them very fast, what we observe is charge that is delocalized.

So, if I was asked to come up with a resonant structure for the nitrate ion, I would have to include all of the possible lewis dot diagrams for nitrate ions with a certain number of single or double bonds?

Yes, indeed.

1. What is the significance of studying the resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3?

The resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 is important because it gives us insight into the chemical bonding and electronic structure of the compound. This can help us understand its properties and behavior, which is crucial in various applications such as in the field of materials science and catalysis.

2. How is the resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 determined?

The resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 is determined using spectroscopic techniques such as infrared and Raman spectroscopy. These techniques allow us to analyze the vibrational frequencies of the compound, which can give us information about its molecular structure and bonding.

3. Can the resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 change under different conditions?

Yes, the resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 can change depending on the surrounding environment. Factors such as temperature, pressure, and pH can affect the position and intensity of the vibrational bands, which can alter the resonant structure.

4. What does a possible solution for the resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 look like?

A possible solution for the resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 would involve the placement of the nitrate ion, Ag+ ion, and the surrounding atoms in their respective positions based on the spectroscopic data. This would result in a diagram or model that illustrates the bonding and molecular structure of the compound.

5. How does understanding the resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 contribute to our understanding of other compounds?

Studying the resonant structure of nitrate ion in AgNO3 can provide a framework for understanding the behavior of other similar compounds. This is because the nitrate ion is a common polyatomic ion and silver nitrate is a widely used compound. Furthermore, understanding the bonding and electronic structure of one compound can give us insights into the properties of other compounds with similar bonding arrangements.
