What pressure can a steel pipe bomb whitstand

In summary, the conversation discusses a hobby in chemistry and a new method of synthesizing compounds that involves using a pipe bomb filled with an aqueous solution of reagents and heated to 300 C. The question posed is whether a 1" steel pipe with a thickness of 2mm and tightly sealed caps can withstand the pressure. However, it is advised to refrain from discussing dangerous activities on the forum.

Hello everyone!

Chemistry is my hobby and I want to try a new method of synthesizing some compounds. It requires a use of a pipe bomb filled up to 3/4 of it's volume with an aqueous solution of reagents and heated to about 300 C. I'm a bit scared thou. Can a 1" steel pipe, about 2mm thick and tightly sealed with caps survive the pressure?

Welcome to PF, pdrol.
Unfortunately, your question is far outside the discussion parameters of this site. Please read the first thread in this subforum, regarding dangerous activities.
You are right to be scared, and more than just "a bit".

What pressure can a steel pipe bomb withstand?

The pressure a steel pipe bomb can withstand depends on several factors such as the thickness, material, and construction of the pipe. It is also affected by the type of explosive material used and the size of the bomb. In general, steel pipes can withstand pressures ranging from a few hundred to several thousand pounds per square inch.

How is the pressure resistance of a steel pipe bomb tested?

The pressure resistance of a steel pipe bomb is typically tested through controlled explosions in a controlled environment. The pipe is placed in a containment chamber and filled with the desired amount of explosive material. The explosion is then triggered and the pressure inside the pipe is measured.

What are the consequences of exceeding the pressure limit of a steel pipe bomb?

If a steel pipe bomb is subjected to pressures beyond its limit, it can result in the pipe bursting or rupturing, causing debris and shrapnel to be propelled at high speeds. This can result in severe injuries or fatalities to those nearby. It can also lead to property damage and destruction.

Can the pressure resistance of a steel pipe bomb be increased?

Yes, the pressure resistance of a steel pipe bomb can be increased by using thicker and stronger steel, as well as incorporating other materials such as carbon fiber or Kevlar. The construction and design of the pipe can also be optimized to withstand higher pressures.

What are some safety measures to take when handling a steel pipe bomb?

Handling a steel pipe bomb is extremely dangerous and should only be done by trained professionals with proper safety gear and equipment. It is important to follow all safety protocols and procedures, including proper storage and handling of the explosive material. It is also crucial to have a designated blast zone and evacuation plan in case of an accidental explosion.
