Arrangements of Springs and Extension

In summary, the conversation discusses problem 20 from a physics exam paper. It involves calculating the extension of a spring system when different weights are supported by different combinations of springs in parallel and series. The solution involves using the formula F=kx and considering the amount of weight supported by each individual spring. The final answer is A, but there is uncertainty about how to arrive at it.

Number 20

Homework Equations

F=kx
1/(n springs) weight is supported if parallel
n if in series

The Attempt at a Solution

The answer is A but I am not sure how to get to it.How do I use the amount of weight supported by springs to get the extension? Especially when there are 2 "levels" of springs.

For X each spring supports mg/2
For Y mg/2
For Z the upper pair supports mg/2
Lower pair mg

1. What is an arrangement of springs and extension?

An arrangement of springs and extension refers to the configuration and layout of springs and other mechanisms used to extend or compress them. This can vary depending on the specific application and design of the system.

2. How do springs affect extension?

Springs play a crucial role in extension by providing resistance to forces and allowing for movement and flexibility. The strength and type of spring used can greatly impact the extension capabilities of a system.

3. What is the relationship between spring stiffness and extension?

The stiffness of a spring refers to its ability to resist deformation under a given force. In general, the stiffer the spring, the less it will extend or compress when subjected to a force.

4. How does the arrangement of springs affect the overall extension of a system?

The arrangement of springs can greatly impact the overall extension of a system. Different arrangements, such as series or parallel, can affect the total stiffness and extension capabilities of the system.

5. What factors should be considered when designing an arrangement of springs for extension?

When designing an arrangement of springs for extension, factors such as the desired extension range, required stiffness, and the amount of force being applied must be taken into account. Additionally, the materials and construction of the springs should also be carefully considered.
