Modelling system at early design stage

In summary, the conversation discusses the task of modeling a mechatronical system on the early stages of product development. The main concern is selecting the most important variables to model and handling the level of imprecision in those models. The problem is not strictly defined and the report should focus on modeling different domains and handling uncertainty. The participants suggest using a "TOP DOWN" or "BOTTOM UP" approach depending on the available information. They also recommend referring to papers that cover the mentioned topics.

Hello,

nice to find this kind of great forum. I am quite puzzled with the task that was given to me: How to model mechatronical system (multidomain) on early product development stage? So, because product is not well defined yet, there are much uncertainties what to model(!)

So, how to select most important variables to model?
How to handle level of imprecision in those kind of models?
how to model multi domain models?

So, as you can see, problem is not very strictly defined. Report should be still about modelling different domains(electric, mechanical, computer science) and handling the uncertainty. So, would you guys have any ideas how to start? even some stupid/clever guesses would help me alot! Any papers including some of stuff I just mentioned would be great.

Thanks for help,

dr Mushroom

If u r asking about the designing...then u can refer "TOP DOWN" or "BOTTOM UP" approaches based on what information u have initially...

FAQ: Modelling system at early design stage

What is the purpose of modelling a system at the early design stage?

Modelling a system at the early design stage allows scientists to simulate and predict the behavior of the system before it is actually built. This can help identify potential issues and make necessary design changes before investing time and resources into the physical construction.

What are the main benefits of using modelling in the early design stage?

Some of the main benefits of using modelling in the early design stage include cost savings, time efficiency, and the ability to test various design options. It also allows for better understanding of the system and potential improvements before it is built.

What types of systems can be modelled at the early design stage?

Almost any type of system can be modelled at the early design stage, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, and biological systems. These models can range from simple to complex, depending on the specific system being studied.

What are the limitations of modelling a system at the early design stage?

One limitation of modelling at the early design stage is that the model is only as accurate as the assumptions and data used to create it. If these are incorrect or incomplete, the model may not accurately reflect the real-world system. Additionally, unforeseen factors or changes during the construction phase may impact the accuracy of the model.

What are some common tools and software used for modelling systems at the early design stage?

Some common tools and software used for modelling systems at the early design stage include computer-aided design (CAD) software, finite element analysis (FEA) software, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. These tools allow for the creation of detailed and accurate models that can be simulated and analyzed.
