Equipment for Hysteresis Loop for Inductor

In summary, hysteresis loop for inductor is a graphical representation of the relationship between magnetic field strength and flux density in an inductor. It is important to measure it because it provides information about the inductor's magnetic properties for designing and selecting it for specific applications. Equipment needed for measurement includes a power supply, oscilloscope, function generator, current probe, and voltage probe. The measurement is done by applying a sinusoidal voltage and observing resulting waveforms on the oscilloscope. Factors that can affect the hysteresis loop include material, geometry, voltage, and temperature.

What instrument would I need to get a hysteresis loop (Flux Density vs Magnetizing Force) for an inductor? Is it something that can be easily obtained given the proper equipment?

Thanks!

That's a good question. It would be easiest if you could wind your own test winding around the inductor...would you be able to do that?

Check out the datasheets for the typical inductors that you want to test -- do the datasheets show any test circuit?

To obtain a hysteresis loop for an inductor, you would need a hysteresis loop tracer. This instrument is specifically designed to measure the flux density (B) vs. magnetizing force (H) relationship for magnetic materials, including inductors. It works by applying a varying magnetic field to the inductor and measuring the resulting flux density.

Hysteresis loop tracers can be easily obtained from electronic equipment suppliers or through online retailers. However, they can be quite expensive and may not be readily available at every electronics store. Alternatively, you could also use an oscilloscope and a function generator to manually measure and plot the hysteresis loop, but this method may be more time-consuming and less accurate.

In summary, while a hysteresis loop tracer is the ideal instrument for obtaining a hysteresis loop for an inductor, it may not be easily obtained for everyone. However, with some research and possibly some creativity, you may be able to find or create a suitable alternative using more commonly available equipment.

FAQ: Equipment for Hysteresis Loop for Inductor

What is hysteresis loop for inductor?

Hysteresis loop for inductor is a graphical representation of the relationship between the magnetic field strength and the magnetic flux density in an inductor. It shows the behavior of an inductor when it is subjected to a changing magnetic field.

Why is it important to measure hysteresis loop for inductor?

Measuring the hysteresis loop for inductor is important because it provides information about the magnetic properties of the inductor, such as its magnetic permeability and hysteresis loss. This information is crucial in designing and selecting inductors for specific applications.

What equipment is needed to measure hysteresis loop for inductor?

The equipment needed to measure hysteresis loop for inductor includes a power supply, an oscilloscope, a function generator, a current probe, and a voltage probe. Some specialized equipment, such as a fluxmeter or a magnetic field generator, may also be required depending on the specific measurement setup.

How is hysteresis loop for inductor measured?

The hysteresis loop for inductor is measured by applying a sinusoidal voltage to the inductor and observing the resulting current and voltage waveforms on the oscilloscope. The current and voltage waveforms are then used to calculate the magnetic field strength and flux density, which are plotted on a graph to obtain the hysteresis loop.

What factors can affect the hysteresis loop for inductor?

The hysteresis loop for inductor can be affected by several factors, such as the material and geometry of the inductor, the frequency and amplitude of the applied voltage, and the surrounding temperature. These factors can change the magnetic properties of the inductor and alter the shape and size of the hysteresis loop.
