Can a function map into or out of the null set?

In summary, a function can involve a mapping into or out of a null set, but it would essentially be the empty function with no elements in the domain. This means that the function would not perform any operations or have any outputs.

Out of: yes, but it doesn't do anything (in an even more literal sense than the identity function doesn't do anything).

Into: Yes, but if it's a function rather than a partial function the domain must have exactly zero elements (because if it had even one it would have needed to map that to something).

So in both cases it's just the empty function, as jbunniii points out.

1. What is a null set?

A null set, also known as an empty set, is a set that contains no elements. It is represented by the symbol ∅ or {}.

2. How are functions involving null sets defined?

Functions involving null sets are defined as mappings from the null set to another set. This means that the function has no input values, but it may have outputs depending on its definition.

3. What is the domain and range of a function involving a null set?

The domain of a function involving a null set is the null set itself, as there are no input values. The range of the function can be any set, depending on its definition.

4. Can a null set be the output of a function?

Yes, a null set can be the output of a function. This can happen if the function is defined to have no outputs, or if the inputs do not correspond to any outputs.

5. How are operations on null sets defined?

Operations on null sets are defined according to the rules of set theory. For example, the union of a null set with any other set is equal to the other set, and the intersection of a null set with any other set is equal to the null set.
