In summary, you are given two regression equations, 2y-3x=10 and 4x-3y=8, and are asked to find the correlation r between x and y, as well as the mean of x and the mean of y. This can be done by looking up the method for computing a regression equation from a sample of data, which involves finding the mean, variance, and covariance of x and y. However, in this problem, the coefficients of the equation are given, so you will need to rearrange the equation to express the slope and intercept in terms of the mean, variance, and covariance of x and y in order to find the desired values.

Homework Statement

given the regression of y on x is 2y-3x=10 and the regression of x on y is 4x-3y=8 find the correlation r between x and y, also find the mean of x and the mean of y.

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I am absolutley clueless on this problem, there is nothing in the book on how to do it, and every other time I have had to find the correlation I had some data set to work with. I am very confused.

When you computed a regression equation from a sample of data, you had to compute the mean and variance of X and Y and their covariance in order to get the coefficients of the equation. In this problem, you are given the coefficients of the equation and asked to find the means and the correlation (which you can find from the covariance and variances). So you need to look up the way that you computed the regression equation from data and see how the slope and intercept are expressed as functions of the mean, variance and covariance of X and Y.

What is the meaning of "Regression of x on y is 4x-3y=8"?

The statement "Regression of x on y is 4x-3y=8" means that there is a relationship between the variables x and y, and the equation 4x-3y=8 is used to model this relationship. This equation is known as the regression line, which can be used to predict the value of y for a given value of x.

What is regression analysis?

Regression analysis is a statistical method used to examine the relationship between a dependent variable (usually denoted as y) and one or more independent variables (usually denoted as x). It is used to understand how the value of the dependent variable changes when the independent variables are varied.

How is the regression line calculated?

The regression line is calculated using a method called least squares regression. This involves finding the line that minimizes the sum of squared distances between each data point and the line. This line is also known as the line of best fit.

What is the interpretation of the slope in regression analysis?

The slope in regression analysis represents the change in the dependent variable (y) for every unit increase in the independent variable (x). In other words, it shows the rate of change of the dependent variable with respect to the independent variable.

How do you interpret the intercept in regression analysis?

The intercept in regression analysis represents the value of the dependent variable (y) when the independent variable (x) is equal to 0. It is the point where the regression line crosses the y-axis. It can also be interpreted as the baseline value of the dependent variable before any changes in the independent variable occur.
