What is the Elastic Modulus of Crazy Glue?

In summary, the elastic modulus of crazy glue, or cyanoacrylate adhesive, ranges from 2,000-5,000 MPa and is relatively high compared to other common adhesives. It is primarily determined by the chemical composition and curing process and can be affected by temperature. The elastic modulus is typically measured using a tensile testing machine.

Helbawi's "Difference in subsurface damage in indented specimens with and without bonding layer," Int J Mech Sci 43 1107-1121 (2001) gives the value to be 1.2 GPa, which seems about right.

Huh. I would have thought a cured adhesive would be a lot more stiff than that. Ya learn something new every day.

1.2 GPa? Thanks for your information.

1. What is the elastic modulus of crazy glue?

The elastic modulus of crazy glue, also known as cyanoacrylate adhesive, varies depending on the specific formulation and curing process. Generally, it falls within the range of 2,000-5,000 MPa (megapascals).

2. How does the elastic modulus of crazy glue compare to other adhesives?

Crazy glue has a relatively high elastic modulus compared to other common adhesives such as white glue or wood glue. This means that it has a higher resistance to deformation under stress.

3. Can the elastic modulus of crazy glue be changed?

The elastic modulus of crazy glue is primarily determined by the chemical composition and curing process. While it may be possible to alter the modulus slightly through changes in these factors, it is not easily adjustable.

4. How does temperature affect the elastic modulus of crazy glue?

The elastic modulus of crazy glue is affected by temperature, with higher temperatures resulting in a lower modulus and lower temperatures resulting in a higher modulus. This is due to the changes in the molecular structure of the glue at different temperatures.

5. How is the elastic modulus of crazy glue measured?

The elastic modulus of crazy glue is typically measured using a tensile testing machine. A small amount of glue is sandwiched between two materials and then pulled apart at a constant rate. The stress and strain values are recorded and used to calculate the elastic modulus.
