Ghosts Definition and 34 Threads

In folklore, a ghost is the soul or spirit of a dead person or animal that can appear to the living. In ghostlore, descriptions of ghosts vary widely from an invisible presence to translucent or barely visible wispy shapes, to realistic, lifelike forms. The deliberate attempt to contact the spirit of a deceased person is known as necromancy, or in spiritism as a séance. Other terms associated with it are apparition, haunt, phantom, poltergeist, shade, specter or spectre, spirit, spook, wraith, demons, and ghouls.
The belief in the existence of an afterlife, as well as manifestations of the spirits of the dead, is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices—funeral rites, exorcisms, and some practices of spiritualism and ritual magic—are specifically designed to rest the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary, human-like essences, though stories of ghostly armies and the ghosts of animals rather than humans have also been recounted. They are believed to haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life. According to a 2009 study by the Pew Research Center, 18% of Americans say they have seen a ghost. The overwhelming consensus of science is that there is no proof that ghosts exist. Their existence is impossible to falsify, and ghost hunting has been classified as pseudoscience. Despite centuries of investigation, there is no scientific evidence that any location is inhabited by spirits of the dead. Historically, certain toxic and psychoactive plants (such as datura and hyoscyamus niger), whose use has long been associated with necromancy and the underworld, have been shown to contain anticholinergic compounds that are pharmacologically linked to dementia (specifically DLB) as well as histological patterns of neurodegeneration. Recent research has indicated that ghost sightings may be related to degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Common prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs (such as sleep aids) may also, in rare instances, cause ghost-like hallucinations, particularly zolpidem and diphenhydramine. Older reports linked carbon monoxide poisoning to ghost-like hallucinations. In folklore studies, ghosts fall within the motif index designation E200-E599 ("Ghosts and other revenants").

A Calculating the ghost field in the Becker and Becker paper

This is the paper that I refer to. I'm trying to figure out the ghost action (Equation 2.16) in the background field gauge. I am attempting to use Srednicki's (chapter 78) expression for the ghost field in the background gauge. However, I am missing out on a √g coefficient in front of the term...

A Gauge breaking and Faddeev-Popov ghost particles

Summary: In QFT, if we add a gauge breaking term to the Lagrangian, do we still need to introduce Faddeev-Popov ghost particles? Ghosts seems to be introduced to maintain gauge invariance. But suppose we have eliminated the gauge invariance, from the start, by explicitly introducing a gauge...

Scientific evidence to prove that ghosts don't exist?

Definition 1: Ghosts are the "creatures" which might be made of particles as we are, but unseen (with the use of photons). Premise 1: We are made of particles or atoms which enable us to think and make us what we are (human creatures). Premise 2: Their might exist creatures which are made...

Comparison of ghosts between U.S.and U.K.

I was reading a rapid reader called The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde. According to that US believed less in ghosts in comparison with UK. Are ghosts real or just a scientific phenomenon?

Hi all, Don't worry, I'm not one of those wackos trying to convince you ghosts exist. I don't even believe in spirits. What I do believe is that people are really experiencing real things, but I believe that there is a scientific explanation to it all. I'm not a physics wiz, so I'm hoping to...

Faddov Ghosts and the non-Abelian Lagrangian

    So my text (Ryder 2nd edition, page 252) is defining the "pure gauge-field Lagrangian" as: G_{\mu \nu}\equiv \partial_{\mu}A_{\nu} - \partial_{\nu}A_{\mu}-ig\left[ A_{\mu},A_{\nu}\right] \mathcal{L} = -\frac{1}{4}Tr G_{\mu \nu} G^{\mu \nu} Dumb question: Isn't G_{\mu \nu} G^{\mu...

Why ghost fields(Faddeev-Popov ghosts) must be ''ghost''?

Please teach me this: Why can we not consider Faddeev ghost as a type of fermi fields, but consider them as a scalar under Lorentz transformation, therefore have wrong relation between spin and statistics? Thank you very much for your kind helping.

Exploring the Scientific Validity of Ghosts: Personal Experiences and Theories

    Fadeev-Popov ghosts and renormalization

I have a question about Fadeev-Popov (FP) ghosts. FP ghosts brake the gauge symmetry of the lagrangian and solve the problem of the divergence of the physical amplitudes, due to the gauge equivalence of the states. My question is: is it a renormalization process? I mean, the renormalization...

Ghosts in Practical Calculations - Questions Answered

Hey guys, I have a question about how to incorporate ghosts in practical calculations. So, from what I understand I have to add a factor of -1 for each closed gluon loop, right? What if they exist? demons, ghosts

Personally, I don't really believe in demons etc. If you do, I don't have any problems. I don't believe in ghosts, but I saw one

I woke up at about 3am the other night and went to the kitchen to get a drink. As I walked back into my room I saw someone standing next to my bed. They walked into the bathroom and disappeared. I only saw it out of the corner of my eye and I was half asleep, but it scared me anyway.
