A book is a medium for recording information in the form of writing or images, typically composed of many pages (made of papyrus, parchment, vellum, or paper) bound together and protected by a cover. The technical term for this physical arrangement is codex (plural, codices). In the history of hand-held physical supports for extended written compositions or records, the codex replaces its predecessor, the scroll. A single sheet in a codex is a leaf and each side of a leaf is a page.
As an intellectual object, a book is prototypically a composition of such great length that it takes a considerable investment of time to compose and still considered as an investment of time to read. In a restricted sense, a book is a self-sufficient section or part of a longer composition, a usage that reflects the fact that, in antiquity, long works had to be written on several scrolls and each scroll had to be identified by the book it contained. Each part of Aristotle's Physics is called a book. In an unrestricted sense, a book is the compositional whole of which such sections, whether called books or chapters or parts, are parts.
The intellectual content in a physical book need not be a composition, nor even be called a book. Books can consist only of drawings, engravings or photographs, crossword puzzles or cut-out dolls. In a physical book, the pages can be left blank or can feature an abstract set of lines to support entries, such as in an account book, an appointment book, an autograph book, a notebook, a diary or a sketchbook. Some physical books are made with pages thick and sturdy enough to support other physical objects, like a scrapbook or photograph album. Books may be distributed in electronic form as ebooks and other formats.
Although in ordinary academic parlance a monograph is understood to be a specialist academic work, rather than a reference work on a scholarly subject, in library and information science monograph denotes more broadly any non-serial publication complete in one volume (book) or a finite number of volumes (even a novel like Proust's seven-volume In Search of Lost Time), in contrast to serial publications like a magazine, journal or newspaper. An avid reader or collector of books is a bibliophile or colloquially, "bookworm". A place where books are traded is a bookshop or bookstore. Books are also sold elsewhere and can be borrowed from libraries. Google has estimated that by 2010, approximately 130,000,000 titles had been published. In some wealthier nations, the sale of printed books has decreased because of the increased usage of ebooks.
So, I'm a computer science major because I love programming and maths, but I really want to also learn the hardware part of computers as well.

I am currently a junior in high school. I have recently read a few books about sub atomic particles and find my self wanting more. I would love some great and simple books about physics. I am mainly interested in particle physics, the standard model and really anything that has to do with string...
Hello. I'd like to hear opinions on good books about either/both Relativities. I have some knowledge of the workings of Special Relativity, and naught but the barest knowledge of General Relativity beyond the basic verbal descriptions, so I'd like to know about good books on that.
Thank you...
Hello. I'd like to know of good suggestions of books on QFT. I have a somewhat firm grasp on non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics, and already know of some good books about it, so I'd like to understand some Quantum Field Theory if at all possible.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions :)
Hello all,
I am working on a science project based upon paper, and I have chosen the affect of friction between two interlaced books. The attachment below is something I have found on the internet, as part of my research.

Physics is not my area so I don't have solid background to understand complex books, I am searching for books to introduce me to quantum physics that I can understand. Can you please recommend any books for me.
I have a substantial mathematics library. Perusing my collection, however, I noticed that none of the book authors were women. I find the lack of prominent female authors in mathematics to be disturbing, both in my libabrary and in the literature in general. So can any of you recommend me...
Hello,
I am looking to read up on some popular science kind of books on Materials Science and Engineering. Something on the lines of "future of materials" or "materials of the future". Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks
Dear folks,
I decided to prepare myself for taking the GRE on mathematics and physics next year, and coming from a non-traditional path (undergrad in music, basically self-taught in scientific matters), I'd like to ask you about some reference books and, thus, about the actual level of each...
I've been looking for a condensed matter problem book (undergrad to graduate level) to brush up on a lot of things. I have Kittel and Ashcroft & Mermin but was looking for something more along the lines of 'A Guide to Physics Problems' to get right to the heart of problem solving.
I see...
Hey i was posting to ask what type of books i can get to make me more knowledgeable on the subject of astrophysics, it could be more general or very specific if you think its worth knowing please lead me to a book that explains. thank you

If you were in his position, which three books would you have taken?
I am in the process of re-learning math to become a high school math teacher.
In school I never really tried or studied and would make C's or B's. I have pretty much forgotten everything, and plus I want to learn again from the ground up to better my understanding and how new learners learn...
Can anyone recommend a book that introduces electronics from a somewhat practical perspective but still doesn't shy away from the underlying math and physics? I know Maxwell's equations and the associated mathematics etc so I would prefer a book that introduces both the theory in its full...
I'd like to share two books of mine with MHB: Fernando Revilla on Scribd (Problems in Linear Algebra & Problems in Real and Complex Analysis). Although they are in Spanish, perhaps could be useful in some sense. At any case if some moderator consider non adequate this post, please feel free to...
Good night. I recently came across Robert Ash's page and realized it is a great source of free books on a handful of subjects. I enjoyed immensely his writing style, and here's hoping you agree.
And here's a link to an interesting piece he wrote:
Remarks on Expository Writing in Mathematics.
Could anyone give advice as to what are some good introduction books/textbooks to read. I have been really interested in QM for a while, figure I'd go away from Wikipedia and Lectures. I am a high schooler, so something more suitable for free time would be helpful. I wouldn't mind a little...
