Steven Paul Jobs (; February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American business magnate, industrial designer, investor, and media proprietor. He was the chairman, chief executive officer (CEO), and co-founder of Apple Inc.; the chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar; a member of The Walt Disney Company's board of directors following its acquisition of Pixar; and the founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT. Jobs is widely recognized as a pioneer of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s, along with his early business partner and fellow Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.
Jobs was born in San Francisco, California, and put up for adoption. He was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended Reed College in 1972 before dropping out that same year, and traveled through India in 1974 seeking enlightenment and studying Zen Buddhism.
Jobs and Wozniak co-founded Apple in 1976 to sell Wozniak's Apple I personal computer. Together the duo gained fame and wealth a year later with the Apple II, one of the first highly successful mass-produced microcomputers. Jobs saw the commercial potential of the Xerox Alto in 1979, which was mouse-driven and had a graphical user interface (GUI). This led to the development of the unsuccessful Apple Lisa in 1983, followed by the breakthrough Macintosh in 1984, the first mass-produced computer with a GUI. The Macintosh introduced the desktop publishing industry in 1985 with the addition of the Apple LaserWriter, the first laser printer to feature vector graphics. Jobs was forced out of Apple in 1985 after a long power struggle with the company's board and its then-CEO John Sculley. That same year, Jobs took a few of Apple's members with him to found NeXT, a computer platform development company that specialized in computers for higher-education and business markets. In addition, he helped to develop the visual effects industry when he funded the computer graphics division of George Lucas's Lucasfilm in 1986. The new company was Pixar, which produced the first 3D computer animated feature film Toy Story (1995), and went on to become a major animation studio, producing over 20 films since then.
Jobs became CEO of Apple in 1997, following his company's acquisition of NeXT. He was largely responsible for helping revive Apple, which had been on the verge of bankruptcy. He worked closely with designer Jony Ive to develop a line of products that had larger cultural ramifications, beginning in 1997 with the "Think different" advertising campaign and leading to the iMac, iTunes, iTunes Store, Apple Store, iPod, iPhone, App Store, and the iPad. In 2001, the original Mac OS was replaced with the completely new Mac OS X (now known as macOS), based on NeXT's NeXTSTEP platform, giving the OS a modern Unix-based foundation for the first time.
Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor in 2003. He died of respiratory arrest related to the tumor at age 56 on October 5, 2011.
Hey guys!
Let me throw in who I am before I introduce my question. I finished my year of graduate school last May, figured out an advisor and a field (something related with Brownian motion on manifolds), and I'm overall happy with it all. No plans of dropping out, I enjoy the company of my...
Hello everyone I'm coming here to ask for some career advice.
I graduated last year with my degree in accounting and I'm really at a point that I just hate it and am getting out of the field completely. I was originally studying to be a teacher for history and art however because of the...
I'm going to be at university soon, so I'm not a student quite yet, but I don't think it's ever too early to start thinking about what I will do after university, so; I'm very interested in the way certain geologists work, as they go to strange and quite dangerous places in the world to complete...
Hi everyone, I have just joined PF.
I just had wanted a bit of advise. I have a BSc in Mathmatics, Statistics & Computing and an MSc in Applied Mathematical Modelling with Scientific Computing. Graduated almsot 3 years ago. I have been working in admin/finance roles since then. At the moment...
How difficult is it to get a job in after receiving the degrees, is it essential for me to get the highest educational degree in these specified degrees or is it pretty much all about luck later on? For example, what chances are there that I will work with astrophysics/aerospace engineering if I...
I graduated with BS degrees in Physics and Applied Math and I then enrolled in a Physics PhD program. However, I took a leave of absence and am now looking for jobs
I think I've only gotten a couple interviews for engineering positions, which were computer engineering/EE-related, but it...
I just got my BS in Physics from Arizona State University (transferred from UC Irvine in CA after decided I didn't want to pursue biology major there and came back to AZ to live with family and work and pursue physics because I like it)
I graduated yesterday and have a fire burning inside me...
Hey Everyone,
So due to the nature of my job I get to 'rotate' to a different position every 9-12 months. I have already completed 1 rotation in flight critical FPGA design (along with various hardware/software responsibilities). I will most likely complete a total of 4 rotations before I...
Hello
I am going to study Electrical Engineering this coming semester and i just wanted to make sure that i don't get any problems due to my minor red-green colour blindness.
I have no problem distinguishing between resistor codes but i normally flunk tests for colour blindness. I rarely...
As the title asks, does a physics background combine better with EE or ME for industry jobs in America? Which engineering field would have more jobs for someone like that?
I'm talking in the context of someone double majoring in physics and ME/EE or doing an engineering physics degree.
I always see "Mathematician" listed as one of the best jobs.
This makes no sense to me. My friend posted this article on Facebook today:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2014/04/19/cnbc-best-and-worst-jobs-of-2014/7881247/
Where do publications get the idea that the job...
I recently tured 28. I have BSc in Computer Science. Originally I wanted to study Physics. Went for CS thinking it is easier to get a job. I have been programming professionally for about 10 years now. I come from a poor family. So CS was a logical choice for getting good money fast.
I've...
Hello to everybody,
I have been looking for online physics jobs, that can be done from home. I wonder if that kind of jobs exist.
I have found jobs related with teaching online, writing articles and so on, but I wonder if there is any option to do "real" physics.
Of course I don't...
Is there any type of job that utilizes scientific computation that does not require a PhD? I really enjoy DSP (digital signals processing), yet it seems like most of those do not want anyone aside from an electrical engineer. My educational background is "too much" but I'll explain it as I go...
When I switched to physics, it was mostly because I love science, and my major in journalism was going to numb my mind to an early grave, but also because frankly I needed to find a job that would make paying for an education a worthwhile investment. I am about to graduate from Shippensburg (one...
I like using computations/modeling/simulation for many kinds of physical problems, whether it be for molecular dynamics simulations, CFD, DFT to determine the electronic structure and properties of materials, molecular dynamics, etc. I'm not interested in hands-on work as I hated my lab classes...
What do you peeps think of the ranking of one's PhD-granting institution and non-academic jobs? We all know that academic jobs are biased in favor of the prestige of one's school first and foremost. I met a recently-granted PhD student from a low-ranked university with eleven relevant...
Hi all, quick query please:
My nearest university is a good one (with a good department) but offers only an MSc Mathematics, not an MSc Statistics. But the course options are such that it can be virtually all statistics and probability. E.g. modules include Mathematical Biology, Medical...
What jobs can a Nuclear Physicist get that involves actual research? I am interested in the field and wish to do a PhD in it however, I don't really want to stay in academia (low pay, publish or perish etc.). So are there any industry jobs a Nuclear Physicist could do? Other?
Also if possible...
Hi,
I have dual citizenship, UK and US, and I have done my degree (Bsc and Msc) at UK universities. As well as 3 years of working as a radiotherapy physicist at a UK hospital. I am looking at moving back to the US so long as I can get a job in my field.
Does anybody know what...
Hey PF!
I am a masters student in mechanical engineering, and I am doing really well. However, once I finish my thesis and graduate, what is the typical way to find a job. Are you head hunted or will I send out resumes? Should I talk with my advisers?
My uncle works with Boeing and has...
Long story short, I'm wondering if there are any at home (extremely) part time ME jobs/ internships out there.
If you're interested in more background:
I just graduated with a mechanical engineering degree in May with a 3.73 GPA. I am currently in veterinary school and was looking for some...
As the title suggest I wish after I finish my higher degree to be involved in a research based career, as far as I can tell
postdoc is for continuing in academia and also teaching, which I am not fond of.
So which options are available without wanting to teach?
I am thinking about being a mechanical engineer but there are a few things I wanted to take into account before I picked this field.
First, the amount of available jobs is important.
Second, salary. I'm not a money crazed person but I plan on raising a family. I want to be able to pay...
Could a Bachelors in CS easily translate to a government job? I have a dream of working for the government, and was wondering how easy it would be to get a job with DoD or NSA with a CS degree. I'm assuming the NSA has the largest amount of CS jobs.
Also, would it be beneficial to attend...
I'm considering attending SF state to study Statistics with emphasis in Economics. However, I worry that the major isn't employable. If that is so, i would do engineering instead. How employable is a Statistics major? Do you think I should do engineering instead, even though I'm not that good...
I'm studying physics II, programming and maths atm. I always wanted to go for physics but I really have cravings for technology stuff like electrical engineering. I always had love for physics but school sort of systematically killed it and I am seeing more freedom in the programming/tech...
I'm wondering what are some 'niche jobs' or niche markets for Electrical Engineers? The kind of jobs that will always be in demand.
I've heard that RF Engineers are always in demand, that there's a short supply and such...but what other fields are there within Electrical Engineering?
A pharmacy company calls me for an interview for a data programmer position. They would want to hire one to deal with data analyses, simulations, etc. I am not all about the payment I can get if I get hired, because I like this type of job. I wonder how much should I suggest if they ask me about...
I am currently a math major and I have one more year before graduating with a bachelors degree. There aren't many career opportunities for a math major -- with only a bachelors degree -- other than being a teacher or going to graduate school; which I heard is very challenging and has a lot of...
Well the title says it all.I know i lack the usually long employer's demands list ,they usually demand more than i know.I sent CVs to specific big and small firms of my interest,i phone called a few,but i got of course no positive reply. The only way to be a perfect fit for a position is by...
Jobs for physics PhD's / At what point can you claim to "know C++"?
I am a year away from graduating my HEP PhD and I'm thinking about what comes next. Postdoc is an obvious option, but the impression I get from this site and elsewhere is that it's a short-sighted one. I'm therefore thinking...
Hi guys, I did have a search through the forum but I didn't find anything quite like my question. Perhaps someone might offer me some advice.
I'm a UK physics PhD student, with about 18 months before I graduate (in principle). At this point I am beginning to get a little fed up of academia and...
Let's ask some different but related questions here. Suppose that someone were to graduate with a PhD in the sciences in 2013. For simplicity's sake, we will consider 3 areas: (1) physics (for the moment, I'm not distinguishing between experimental or theoretical physics), (2) chemistry, and (3)...
I want to be a physics teacher but in my country as from 2015 there won't be any employing of teachers because it's already saturated. So i was thinking if i could get some guidance maybe on my future career plans
Hi I recently got accepted into a 4 year degree in theoretical physics but I`m kinda starting to worry now that I might not get a job in it. I never really thought about employment before I just chose what I thought was most interesting. But , looking at the coursework, how does learning about...
Hi everyone. Given the often contradictory information that is floating around regarding what fields are most/least in demand, I thought I would put this question to the entire Physics Forums community.
What types of jobs are MOST in demand in the US as of 2013? Now please keep in mind that I...
friends i have done my aeronautical engineering with grade A and even well versed in catia v5 and UG(nx) but all this is not fetching jobs in india. so i am planning to do my MBA ,is that a good option . waiting for your prompt reply ...
I had lots of jobs when I was in college. Most were typical student jobs: waitress, 7-11 clerk (no I never got robbed), and telemarketer (yeah I know but I *needed* the cash!).
But there were unusual ones too: I did electronic assembly (PC soldering and assembling wire harnesses). I...
I plan on getting a bachelors in physics at my university. My question is what kind of jobs will I be able to get? I want to know any possible jobs, including ones that aren't related in physics. Also, say if I were to also double major or minor in economics or applied math. What sorts of...
Hi everybody,
First, hi PF! It seems like there's a pretty wide array of backgrounds on the forums, so I'm hoping I can solicit a little advice.
I recently graduated with an MS in Physical Chemistry from a top-ranked program. I passed my qualifying exam and everything, but decided that...
According to most science jobs websites, like jobs.sciencecareers.org, the number of jobs in biology far exceeds the number of jobs in every other natural science, like physics or chemistry.
What gives?
Greetings Physics Forums,
Yes, checking for typing errors apparently is not my strong point! I'm a few months away from my defense, and have been considering the next step for a few months now. My PhD will be from a physics department, but I have been doing what amounts to biological...
I'll be finishing my Physics PhD in about six months, and I am looking to leave Physics for jobs in consulting, finance, or at an insurance company. There's been plenty written here about finance jobs, but not as much about the other two, despite them appearing to be some of the major outlets...
If applying for engineering jobs (excluding civil) would there be any benefit in having one of the following degree titles over the other?
a) Physics BSc
b) Physics with Astrophysics BSc
In other words, would it be preferable to have one instead of the other? Or would it make little...
Ever since I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree as a Computer Science major, I have been wanting to get into the field of scientific computing/computational science. I have educated myself a lot by taking online courses like Scientific Computing, Computing for Data analysis, Machine...
I really want to know how the prospects for having a job in Europe are at this moment. If anybody knows about some info about England I'd be glad. Is having the equivalent of a master from a well known russian university enough for having a decent job in europe or anywhere else?
Hi all
If I want to volunteer in the research lab in the summer, how should I contact the professor to inquiry about this opportunities? I am an undergraduate electrical students, and I am interested in the the signal processing and data communication. However, I don't have any related...
