Steven Paul Jobs (; February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American business magnate, industrial designer, investor, and media proprietor. He was the chairman, chief executive officer (CEO), and co-founder of Apple Inc.; the chairman and majority shareholder of Pixar; a member of The Walt Disney Company's board of directors following its acquisition of Pixar; and the founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT. Jobs is widely recognized as a pioneer of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s, along with his early business partner and fellow Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.
Jobs was born in San Francisco, California, and put up for adoption. He was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended Reed College in 1972 before dropping out that same year, and traveled through India in 1974 seeking enlightenment and studying Zen Buddhism.
Jobs and Wozniak co-founded Apple in 1976 to sell Wozniak's Apple I personal computer. Together the duo gained fame and wealth a year later with the Apple II, one of the first highly successful mass-produced microcomputers. Jobs saw the commercial potential of the Xerox Alto in 1979, which was mouse-driven and had a graphical user interface (GUI). This led to the development of the unsuccessful Apple Lisa in 1983, followed by the breakthrough Macintosh in 1984, the first mass-produced computer with a GUI. The Macintosh introduced the desktop publishing industry in 1985 with the addition of the Apple LaserWriter, the first laser printer to feature vector graphics. Jobs was forced out of Apple in 1985 after a long power struggle with the company's board and its then-CEO John Sculley. That same year, Jobs took a few of Apple's members with him to found NeXT, a computer platform development company that specialized in computers for higher-education and business markets. In addition, he helped to develop the visual effects industry when he funded the computer graphics division of George Lucas's Lucasfilm in 1986. The new company was Pixar, which produced the first 3D computer animated feature film Toy Story (1995), and went on to become a major animation studio, producing over 20 films since then.
Jobs became CEO of Apple in 1997, following his company's acquisition of NeXT. He was largely responsible for helping revive Apple, which had been on the verge of bankruptcy. He worked closely with designer Jony Ive to develop a line of products that had larger cultural ramifications, beginning in 1997 with the "Think different" advertising campaign and leading to the iMac, iTunes, iTunes Store, Apple Store, iPod, iPhone, App Store, and the iPad. In 2001, the original Mac OS was replaced with the completely new Mac OS X (now known as macOS), based on NeXT's NeXTSTEP platform, giving the OS a modern Unix-based foundation for the first time.
Jobs was diagnosed with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor in 2003. He died of respiratory arrest related to the tumor at age 56 on October 5, 2011.
So, not going to lie I'm kinda scared about majoring in physics, I'm sure it will be very tough.
I plan on majoring in physics and then going for astrophysics while getting my doctorate. After spending all of this time in school i'll have jobs right? I mean I wouldn't think someone with a...
Is condensed matter physics the most useful field in physics to study for someone who wants to work in industry (with a B.Sc or M.Sc)?
I am talking about in the USA for the record.
I'm not currently working in science but I have a physics degree. So far I've worked in computer tech support, biology research and (currently) teaching English in a foreign country. I'm looking to eventually go back to school and pursue a science career but since most of the deadlines are past...
I have always been interested in light and sound design (mostly at concerts) and was wondering how could i get into a job or something that will help me get involved into that field ?
i don't really want to go through my schools theature program just because i don't like it but yeah help me
I am a freshman in college and have my heart set on a degree in physics. Although this is just the beginning for me, I think its worth thinking about my end game. What I'm looking for is knowledge about a job relating to a degree in physics. This is not specific to scientific research or...
Hi all,
I am a long time reader and first time poster. Basically I am graduate student who is finishing up a ph.d in experimental condensed matter. I have no desire to move forward in academia and I have been looking into other options. The most attractive option to me at the moment is...
Hi! I am a senior undergraduate student. I am really interested in math and would like to pursue it further, but I will not have time to finish a math major before the end of the year. (I'm close, but I started as a creative writing major and haven't had time to pick up the last 3 or so math...
So I was originally interviewed by a massive Telecommunications company. I made it to the final round that
composed of me and another candidate. They chose the other candidate over me. About 4 months later I was hired by another company; not exactly in my field. I really like this company since...
So I have the opportunity to spend two years getting a masters in computational science at the university I got my bachelors at. Its through the math dept. and my undergrad degree was in math so it shouldn't be a problem getting in. If I do it I intend to do my interdisciplinary concentration...
What kind of job in the science or engineering field would have you build stuff and do experiments. I talked to a guy that worked as an engineer, and he said they had to do a lot of paper work to do anything and he said it wasn't fun. And another guy I talked too said at nuclear power plants...
Tis almost the season when all of the folks hired temporarily for the Christmas season get tossed out on the streets, to wander aimlessly about until they find the unemployment line.
I wonder what it must be like to be a Christmas season temporary employee. Finally, someone has captured the...
I'm finishing my first semester in university with a 4.0 GPA taking Honours classes, I'm working on a paper that will be published with a post-doc in Physics, and I have a summer research position lined up. I'm doing a double Honours Astrophysics and Mathematics program and I've already read...
Im graduating with a BS in physics, where I mostly focused on astrophysics. I'm looking to do something different after I graduate, not planning on grad school, at least for the time being. I'm interested in getting a job somehow related to renewable energy technology, and it would also be a...
I have been thinking about this for a while.
One of the biggest causes of lost jobs is that automation has eliminated
more jobs than it has created. With all the computers we have, work should
be like in a Jetson's cartoon where you just go in push the "start" button
and then sit back with...
Hello everyone,
I am doing B.Tech. in Engineering Physics and in my final year right now. I come from a reputed institute we are generally offered on campus jobs although at my institute there aren't many core companies related to my major.
Anyway, my plans are to obtain a masters degree. My...
Hasn't anyone else thought of this? Apparently he was a notorious jerk to the people who worked with/for him and he seemed to be good at designing electronics, so where are the news stories about Jobs having autism? Has anyone else noticed that?
I'm almost done with my PhD in physics(hep-ex). It's about 6-7 months till I'm out. I was curious about everyone's opinions on what is the right time to start looking/applying for jobs. Is now too early (or should I have already started)?
Not really interested in post-docs, so this purely a...

It took me a while to find a video of the complete speech, so I thought I'd share this link in case others want to watch it. He gets a lot into 33 minutes.
Dear PF,
I will be completing my PhD in Astronomy (specializing in cosmology) early next year, but I am unsure if I want to continue on with a post-doc. I have been looking into other career options lately, especially in finance and consulting. However, I haven't been able to find answers to...
Hi,
I'm an about-to-be grade twelve student who is interested in physics and astronomy. I am taking math honours, physics, chemistry, and ap clalculus in my last year of high school. In university I plan on taking phyiscs, astrophysics, and astronomy. I, like many others, am looking for a future...

Do you think he was a good leader?
I think the true test of a good leader is in how well a company does after s/he is gone. As a leader, if the company can't succeed without you, how great can...
I know job prospects in academia suck, but what, to the best of your knowledge, is the field in physics with the most promising future as far as jobs is concerned?
By getting a Ph.D. in what field do you stand a better chance of getting a postdoc position?
Hi all,
I'm basically finishing a PhD right now (viva at the end of the month) in solar physics and have been finding it very difficult to get a job. I'd prefer not to stay in academia, though have applied for several postdocs as a job would be better than none at all! There aren't many...
It takes a lot of time for my Fortran program to do I/O jobs. Is there any way to do I/O jobs while at the same time it is doing computing jobs? To do I/O jobs and computing jobs at the same time would save a lot of time.
Thanks.
Hi, I've heard of physicists working on the financial sector. Do these physicists only have a bachelor degree, master or PhD? And is it difficult to go to the financial sector as a physicist?
Do you basically work for a company when they get a big contract and when it is done, do you get laid off? I want to become an aerospace engineer, but I want to have a steady job to support a family. Is it work when there are contracts, and then you are out of work when they are done, or is it...
Hi,
I am not even in grad school yet. But I have been reading a lot about the "post doc trap" lately.
I have also read some of two-fish quant's posts talking about jobs outside of academia.
I'd want to know the landscape of employment opportunities for Physics Ph.D's outside of...
My nephew needs a bit of help in finding 2 jobs to write about for his career plan, he knows what subjects he wants to do at a level but can't find any jobs that fit the subjects.
The subjects he would like to do are,

I'm not sure if Quantum physics can be a specialization.. and if it can then what jobs can a Quantum physicist have ? also can you tell me what other subjects you would have to study along with Quantum physics ?
Hello everyone, I'd like your opinions/advice on a few things, your help would be greatly appreciated. Right now I'm getting close to finishing my degree but I still have a few parts that I can change and I'm not fully sure what I want to do or what would be best.
I'm currently an...
I have a PhD in physics, and have been working as a scientist since I graduated last year. I've been looking for a new job since January. I have a couple offers lined up and one more interview coming up. And I botched one interview.
One offer is for a postdoc in my field. The other offer...
I'm looking for opinions/advice... what kinds of jobs do you think I could get with a BA in physics that would pay the most?
I'm looking for something to do starting next fall.
Well didn't even start my degree yet but I'm trying to figure out what a math major does in co-op. What kind of gigs can he land?
On another note, if you want to do research while you're in undergraduate, how can you even help? With sciences you can atleast help set up the lab but with math...
Heyy there,
This is Nakib. I have a BSc degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands (TUDelft) and for the past 8 months I have been job hunting. As all of you might know that the US is really not the best place for finding an entry level job atm...

and even where not, should be ignored. At least in case of conflict. Discuss.
In parents' imaginative, somehow at the same time ideal and dismal, worlds there are only engineers, doctors, lawyers and maybe a token economist.

I graduated in 2005 with a 2 year transfer degree in Engineering. However, I gave up on Engineering after graduating due to discouragement and decided to pursue my own life. For 5 years this plan worked out fine and I was an Entrepreneur being my own boss, calling the shots and fixing things for...
I live in the UK. I'm planning on becoming an Astrophysicist. I was wondering, where could I work and what is the salary like? By the way, I live in the UK but feel free to talk about America. Can I work in Universities?
So I've been thinking more and more of going on to grad school for EE after I graduate and I would like to know more about the job market for phd grads.
Although its probably way to early to say this but I don't think I'm too interested in academia so I'm talking about industry or...
I've decided I really like math, but I'm too realistic to expect to make a living off of it alone. Are there any jobs for people who love to think, and quickly tire of calculation-based/statistics-like math.
I've considered the many engineering fields, but I'm guessing most of them would top...
I am 15 years old and are taking Earth and Environmental science as an elective in school. I was hoping to study in advanced science at university and major in geology. What jobs would be available to me after university.
In May I will be graduating from a local community college with an associates in general engineering. I will be moving onto a four year school to finish my BS (most likely Temple University). Now my question is, are there any jobs that you could get with only an associates while I continuing my...
Hey guys,
I'm currently doing undergrad studies in biology, and I live with my folks. The thing is, I need to move out and live on my own, because the situation is insufferable and gets worse every day. I was wondering if there is anything in any sort of science area that I can get full...
I am currently a sophomore engineering major thinking of switching to a math major. Math is my favorite subject, and I would like nothing more than to switch majors. However, I am a hesitant to switch because of the nature of most math careers that I know of. It seems like most math majors end...
