C 12B 2021 #23Analyzing Motion Graphs: Understanding Slopes and Acceleration

In summary: SL:In summary, the two pictures show different aspects of the same equation. The first picture shows how velocity changes over time, while the second picture shows how acceleration changes over time. Graph A is for the first picture and Graph D is for the second picture.

The Attempt at a Solution

For the first picture I was thinking answer B because at the start velocity increases, but as terminal velocity is hit the velocity doesn't increase as much.. why is it graph A?

For the second picture it shows velocity is constant and then velocity decreases (for the velocity/time graph) so then it would be graph D because the slope is constant and then there is a slope that shows velocity isn't increasing as much referencing the abrupt decrease in velocity in the velocity/time graph.. however the answer is graph C with this curve at the end instead, why is it graph C?

The graphs are of displacement, not velocity.
What aspect of the graph indicates velocity?

Think of the slope of the distance vs time graph in relation to the speed vs time graph.

The first part with constant v is easy. For the secongd part, what does the constant downward slope of the graph say about acceleration? In what direction? In D, the second part has constant slope which says that speed is _________. Is the speed __________?

1. What is a motion graph?

A motion graph is a visual representation of the motion of an object over time. It typically shows the relationship between an object's position, velocity, and acceleration.

2. How do you interpret a motion graph?

To interpret a motion graph, you need to understand the meaning of each axis. The horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical axis represents the position, velocity, or acceleration of the object. The slope of the graph indicates the rate of change of the quantity on the vertical axis.

3. What is the difference between a position-time graph and a velocity-time graph?

A position-time graph shows the change in an object's position over time, while a velocity-time graph shows the change in an object's velocity over time. The slope of a position-time graph gives the object's velocity, while the slope of a velocity-time graph gives the object's acceleration.

4. How can you determine an object's acceleration from a motion graph?

An object's acceleration can be determined by finding the slope of the velocity-time graph. The steeper the slope, the greater the acceleration. Additionally, a horizontal line on a velocity-time graph indicates constant acceleration, while a curved line indicates changing acceleration.

5. How can you use a motion graph to predict an object's future motion?

By analyzing the slope of a velocity-time graph, you can predict an object's future velocity. Similarly, by analyzing the slope of an acceleration-time graph, you can predict an object's future acceleration. This information can then be used to make predictions about an object's future position and motion.
