Can a high speed camera accurately calculate golf ball spin and speed?

In summary, to calculate golf ball spin (backspin and sidespin) and speed using a high speed camera, you will need to use an image processing library such as OpenCV and find a camera with a fast frame rate and adjustable shutter speed. Adequate lighting is also important to ensure clear visibility of the markings on the ball.

Calculating golf ball spin!

Looking for some help in starting a project to calculate golf ball spin (backspin and sidespin) as well as speed using a high speed camera. My plan was to use a high speed camera to capture several shots of a ball moving and determine the spin based on rotation of either a marking on the ball or dimple pattern. Does anyone know of any programs that are available to start this proces? Any help with the camera specs needed (ie the frame rate, shutter speed, lighting etc) would also be appreciated. The speed of the ball would be anywhere from 10mph to 200 mph. Thank you in advance.

It sounds like you're looking for a computer vision solution to this problem. You will need to use an image processing library like OpenCV in order to identify the markings or dimple patterns on the ball and track any changes in rotation. The camera specs needed would depend on the speed of the ball, but you should look for a camera with a fast frame rate to capture the images quickly. You may also need to adjust the shutter speed depending on the speed of the ball. Lighting may be a factor as well, depending on the visibility of the markings. Make sure you have enough light to see the markings clearly.

1. What factors affect the spin of a golf ball?

The spin of a golf ball is affected by several factors, including the club face angle at impact, the speed and angle of the swing, the type and condition of the golf ball, and the surface of the golf club.

2. How do you measure the spin of a golf ball?

The spin of a golf ball can be measured using a launch monitor, which uses Doppler radar technology to track the ball's flight and calculate the spin rate. This measurement is typically given as revolutions per minute (RPM).

3. What is the ideal spin rate for a golf ball?

The ideal spin rate for a golf ball varies depending on the club and the desired shot. Generally, a lower spin rate is preferred for longer shots, as it reduces the amount of drag and allows the ball to travel further. For shorter shots, a higher spin rate can help the ball stop quickly on the green.

4. How does spin affect the trajectory of a golf ball?

The spin of a golf ball has a significant impact on its trajectory. A backspin will cause the ball to rise higher and travel further, while a sidespin can cause the ball to curve left or right. The amount of spin also affects the amount of lift and drag on the ball, which can alter its flight path.

5. Can golf ball spin be controlled?

While there are certain factors that can influence the spin of a golf ball, such as the type of club and swing technique, it is difficult to consistently control the amount of spin on each shot. However, with practice and proper technique, golfers can learn to manipulate spin to achieve their desired shot results.
