In summary, there is a growing debate in the US about teaching creationism and evolution in public schools. Some schools, such as Virginia's Liberty University, have made creationism a mandatory class. Other schools, like Dover, PA, are teaching "intelligent design" alongside evolution. Some argue that students should have the freedom to question evolution, while others believe in teaching evolution based on authentic science. President Bush has advocated for teaching different theories and critiques of any theory. A recent poll found that almost two thirds of Americans favor teaching both creationism and evolution in public schools. However, there are those who believe that most Americans and politicians are not knowledgeable or qualified to have an opinion on the matter, and that the support for creationism may be due

WASHINGTON - Creationism is a mandatory class at Virginia's Liberty University, a Christian college founded in Lynchburg by evangelist Jerry Falwell.

(...)

The latest effort is to teach high school students "intelligent design" - which attributes the origin of the world to an intelligent designer, without using the word "God," and embraces some aspects of science.

Next month, ninth-graders in Dover, Pa., will become the first public school students in the nation to be taught "intelligent design" alongside evolution.

(...)

DeWitt believes all students should "have the academic freedom to question evolution. . . . I think it's dishonest to shove evolution down these students' throats as a fact."

But Cobb County high school biology teacher Wes McCoy argues that students need to be taught "a rational, step-by-step explanation of evolution" based on "authentic science" and that does not contradict religious beliefs.

(...)

But Morris, a proponent of teaching students "intelligent design," believes the theory of evolution is a type of unproven religion based on "weak" scientific evidence.

President Bush advocates teaching children "different theories about how the world started" and "scientific critiques of any theory."

Most Americans agree with him.

Nearly 80 years since the Scopes "Monkey Trial" pitted evolutionists against creationists, a CBS poll last month found that almost two thirds of Americans favor teaching creationism and evolution in public schools.

Last month, voters across the country backed a number of pro-creationism candidates, including Sen.-elect Jim DeMint, R-S.C., who attacked his opponent, state Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum, for pushing evolution in schools.

I hate fundamentalists, i just want to throw that out there.

They're like the crackpots who claim relativity is only a theory, and not proven.

No, its really basically a fact. At worst its oversimplified, but its not wrong. And the same goes for evolution. The fact is that most americans know nothing about science and are not qualified to have an opinion in these matters. And the same goes for most politicians, since they draw from the same pool of ignorance.

They are the people who largely agreed with Kerry's policies and voted for Bush.

What is "Creationists Try to Edge Around Ban" about?

"Creationists Try to Edge Around Ban" is a news article discussing the attempts of creationist organizations to circumvent a ban on teaching creationism in public schools. The ban was put in place to uphold the separation of church and state and promote the teaching of science in schools.

Why is there a ban on teaching creationism in public schools?

The ban on teaching creationism in public schools is in place to uphold the separation of church and state, as stated in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. It also promotes the teaching of science, which is based on evidence and the scientific method, rather than religious beliefs.

What are some ways that creationist organizations have tried to get around the ban?

Creationist organizations have tried various tactics to get around the ban on teaching creationism in public schools. Some have tried to rename creationism as "intelligent design" or "teaching the controversy," while others have attempted to introduce religious teachings under the guise of academic freedom or critical thinking.

What is the impact of creationist organizations trying to edge around the ban?

The attempts of creationist organizations to edge around the ban can have a negative impact on the education system. By introducing religious beliefs into the science curriculum, it undermines the teaching of science based on evidence and the scientific method. It also creates confusion and controversy in the classroom, which can be harmful to students.

How can educators and lawmakers address the issue of creationists trying to edge around the ban?

Educators and lawmakers can address this issue by staying informed about the tactics used by creationist organizations and actively promoting the teaching of science in schools. They can also work to strengthen the ban on teaching creationism and enforce consequences for those who attempt to circumvent it. Additionally, providing resources and support for educators to effectively teach science can help combat the influence of creationist organizations.
