In summary, Mount Etna's eruption on May 21 has caused flights to be halted at Sicily's Catania airport due to volcanic ash on the runways. This 10,925 ft high volcano is known for its frequent eruptions, with the last major one occurring in 1992. Meanwhile, Mexico has raised the alert level for the Popocatepetl volcano as it continues to spew smoke, ash, and molten rock into the sky. Considered one of the most dangerous in the world, this volcano poses risks to aviation and nearby communities. As of May 14, 2023, there are currently 42 volcanoes erupting globally.

Mount Etna eruption halts flights to Sicily's Catania airport

ROME, May 21 (Reuters) - Flights serving the eastern Sicilian city of Catania were halted on Sunday after an eruption from nearby Mount Etna spewed volcanic ash onto its runways, airport authorities said.

The 3,330 metre (10,925 ft) high volcano can burst into spectacular action several times a year, firing lava and ash high over the Mediterranean island. The last major eruption was in 1992.

Mexico raises alert level as volcano ejects smoke, ash, lava

Mexican authorities on Sunday raised the warning level for the Popocatepetl volcano to one step below red alert, as smoke, ash and molten rock spewed into the sky posing risks to aviation and far-flung communities below.

The volcano, located in central Mexico, is considered one of the most dangerous in the world because some 25 million people live within a 100-kilometer (60-mile) radius.

Sunday's increased alert level -- to "yellow phase three" -- comes a day after two Mexico City airports temporarily halted operations due to falling ash.

Popocatepetl is located on the borders of the central states of Morelos, Mexico, and Puebla, the capital of which an AFP reporter said Sunday had woken up to a blanketing of gray ash.

As of 14 May, 2023, there are 42 volcanoes erupting around the earth!

What is the current activity level of Mount Etna?

As of the latest reports, Mount Etna has been exhibiting intermittent explosive activity with ash emissions and occasional lava fountaining. The activity is typical for Etna, which is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Authorities continuously monitor the volcano for any changes in its behavior.

What are the recent developments in the activity of Popocatepetl?

Popocatepetl volcano has shown an increase in activity, characterized by frequent ash emissions and sporadic explosions. The local government regularly issues advisories and maintains an exclusion zone around the volcano's crater to ensure safety. Residents nearby are advised to stay informed through official channels.

How does the activity of these volcanoes affect nearby populations?

The activity of both Mount Etna and Popocatepetl can impact nearby populations primarily through ash fall, which can affect air quality, contaminate water supplies, and disrupt daily activities. Authorities in both regions have emergency protocols in place to mitigate these effects, including evacuation plans if necessary.

Are there any travel restrictions due to the eruptions of Etna or Popocatepetl?

Travel restrictions can be imposed in areas close to both Etna and Popocatepetl during periods of heightened volcanic activity. These restrictions often affect hiking trails and access to the volcanoes themselves. Tourists planning to visit these areas are advised to check the latest updates from local authorities or tour operators.

What measures are in place for monitoring and alerting the public about changes in volcanic activity?

Both Mount Etna and Popocatepetl are equipped with extensive monitoring networks that include seismographs, GPS instruments, and surveillance cameras to detect signs of increased activity. Local volcanic observatories issue regular updates and alerts to keep the public and relevant authorities informed. In addition, emergency response plans are regularly reviewed and updated in response to the current volcanic activity levels.
