Learn Relativity Theory: Math Education Needed?

In summary, having a background in calculus and linear algebra is enough to start understanding special relativity, but for general relativity, knowledge of tensors will also be necessary. With a good textbook and dedication to working through the material, one can successfully learn relativity theory on their own.

What knowledge based are needed in relativity theory, not general public science education level, but true and mathematically.
I have calculus and linear algebra education in university, Chinese engineering degree, quite rigorous in math education. Can I actually pick up relativity theory myself now?

Calculus and linear algebra should be enough prerequisites in order to start understanding special relativity. The assumption is of course that you sit down with and work through a good textbook on the subject.

Hi modeler, welcome to PF!

Yes, your math background is sufficient for special relativity. For general relativity you will need to learn tensors, which are not too difficult but the notation is a bit odd at first.

1. What is Relativity Theory?

Relativity Theory is a branch of physics that explains the relationship between space and time, as well as the motion of objects in the universe. It was first proposed by Albert Einstein in the early 20th century and has since been proven to be a fundamental theory in modern physics.

2. Why is math education needed to learn Relativity Theory?

Math education is essential in learning Relativity Theory because it involves complex mathematical concepts such as calculus, differential equations, and tensors. These mathematical tools are necessary for understanding the principles and equations of Relativity Theory.

3. What are the key principles of Relativity Theory?

The key principles of Relativity Theory include the principle of relativity, which states that the laws of physics are the same for all observers in uniform motion, and the principle of the constancy of the speed of light, which states that the speed of light is the same for all observers regardless of their relative motion.

4. How does Relativity Theory affect our everyday lives?

Relativity Theory has practical applications in everyday life, such as in GPS systems, which rely on the principles of relativity to accurately calculate location and time. It also plays a crucial role in understanding the behavior of objects at high speeds, such as in particle accelerators.

5. Is it difficult to learn Relativity Theory?

Relativity Theory can be challenging to grasp, especially for those without a strong background in math and physics. However, with dedication and a solid understanding of the necessary mathematical concepts, it is possible to learn and understand Relativity Theory.
