Very neat stirling application

In summary, the conversation discusses a potential solution for energy efficiency through the use of a prototype variant that generates a small amount of electricity. This device has the potential to reduce both the electricity required to run the machine and the load on air conditioning, making it a promising solution for energy problems. The conversation also suggests that focusing on simple and inexpensive devices can have a significant impact on reducing energy consumption.

It /is/ neat. I'd be interested to know how they start it.

I also saw a prototype variant a couple of years ago, without the fan, that generated a small (very) amount of electricity from the stirling to reduce the amount consumed. The big potential advantage was that by returning the heat to electricity it reduced both the electricity required to run the machine by improving efficiency but also in turn reduced by a very small amount the load on the air conditioning in the room where the machine is operated. Not a huge amount per machine but taken across an entire server farm it starts getting interesting.

I firmly believe that this is where our energy problem solutions should focused.
not on a 'bigger better, new and improved widget" but on how just the addition of a simple, cheap expendable device decreases the energy consumption. Wonder how much they are.

Related to Very neat stirling application

1. What is a Stirling engine?

A Stirling engine is a type of heat engine that converts heat energy into mechanical work. It operates on the principle of cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gases at different temperatures, without any internal combustion.

2. How does a Stirling engine work?

A Stirling engine works by using a sealed cylinder filled with a working fluid, such as air or helium. The engine has two pistons, one hot and one cold, which move the fluid back and forth between them. As the fluid is heated and cooled, it expands and contracts, causing the pistons to move and creating mechanical work.

3. What is a very neat Stirling application?

A very neat Stirling application refers to the use of Stirling engines in practical and efficient ways. This can include power generation, heating and cooling systems, and even transportation. Stirling engines are known for their quiet operation, low maintenance, and ability to use a variety of heat sources, making them a promising alternative to traditional engines.

4. What are the advantages of using a Stirling engine?

Some advantages of using a Stirling engine include its high efficiency, low emissions, and ability to use renewable energy sources. Stirling engines also have fewer moving parts, making them more reliable and easier to maintain than traditional engines. They are also quiet and vibration-free, making them ideal for use in residential or urban areas.

5. Are there any limitations to Stirling engines?

One limitation of Stirling engines is their slow startup time, as they require time to heat up and reach optimal operating temperature. They also have a lower power-to-weight ratio compared to traditional engines, making them less suitable for certain applications. Additionally, the cost of manufacturing Stirling engines can be higher than other types of engines, although advancements in technology are helping to reduce these costs.
