In summary, the most widely used CAD software in the industrial world varies depending on the industry. However, for Mechanical Engineering, Pro/E and Solidworks are commonly used, along with Unigraphics and CATIA in aerospace companies.

I'm currently on a Mech Eng undergrad course going into my final year. I have used a number of drawing and simulation packages.

My question is, in the industrial world what is the most used piece of CAD software? I am not so good with Pro/E and so so with AutoCAD. We are learning Solidworks this year. Out of the 3 named which would you say is the most widely used in industry?

I've always been more of a pencil paper kind of student :P

I depends on the industry. For MechE's, Pro/E and Solidworks are probably the most used in general (along with Unigraphics and CATIA, especially in aerospace companies).

What is mechanical engineering design/CAD software?

Mechanical engineering design/CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software is a set of computer programs used to create, modify, analyze, or optimize designs for mechanical components or systems. These programs typically use 2D or 3D modeling tools, simulation and analysis features, and drafting capabilities to help engineers and designers develop and visualize their ideas.

What are the benefits of using mechanical engineering design/CAD software?

One of the main benefits of using mechanical engineering design/CAD software is the ability to create accurate and detailed designs in a shorter amount of time compared to manual drafting methods. CAD software also allows for easy modification of designs and the ability to simulate and test designs before physical prototyping, reducing costs and time in the development process.

What are some common features of mechanical engineering design/CAD software?

Some common features of mechanical engineering design/CAD software include 2D and 3D modeling tools, simulation and analysis capabilities, drafting tools, and the ability to import and export various file formats. Other features may include collaboration and version control tools, parametric modeling, and integration with other engineering software.

What types of industries use mechanical engineering design/CAD software?

Mechanical engineering design/CAD software is used in a wide variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, consumer products, industrial equipment, and construction. It is also commonly used in research and development, prototyping, and manufacturing processes.

How can I learn mechanical engineering design/CAD software?

There are various ways to learn mechanical engineering design/CAD software, including self-study through online tutorials and courses, on-the-job training, and formal education programs. Many software companies also offer training and certification programs for their specific CAD software. It is important to regularly update skills and knowledge through continuing education to keep up with advancements in CAD technology.
