In summary: Some people find Spanish more "romantic" sounding or believe that Spanish speakers (of all people) are more intelligent than Mandarin speakers. Again, this is just one person's opinion! In summary, Spanish may be more beneficial for those looking to work in Latin America, while Mandarin may be more beneficial for those looking for jobs in other parts of the world.

I need to take a language course to complete my physics degree and I am wondering which language will be more beneficial in the job market for physics/astronomy. I am either going to take Spanish or Mandarin. I did notice that there are a lot of physics/astronomy jobs in Latin America so will learning Spanish be more beneficial? Or will Mandarin be more beneficial since there are a lot of non-China countries that speak Mandarin too.

I suggest a forum search. This question has been asked several times.

For example: https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/what-foreign-language-to-learn.808930/

My question is tailored to a very specific niche industry that doesn’t correlate with mathematics. My question is only focused to physics and astronomy jobs which the question you linked doesn’t relate to.

I was using that as an example, not the only post on the site answering your question.

Aside from (my) being confused by your further comments in this topic; study the language which you think you would like! You can try to look at logical reasons or technical reasons to choose which language, but also try to think which language you WANT, just because of that language or cultures of the people who speak it.

1. What is the most important language to learn for Physics/Astronomy jobs?

The most important language to learn for Physics/Astronomy jobs is undoubtedly Python. It is a versatile and powerful language that is widely used in scientific computing and data analysis. It also has a large and active community, making it easy to find resources and support.

2. Do I need to learn a programming language for Physics/Astronomy jobs?

Yes, it is highly recommended to learn a programming language for Physics/Astronomy jobs. In today's world, data analysis and computational modeling are essential skills for any scientist. Learning a programming language will make you a more competitive and efficient researcher.

3. Is it better to learn a general-purpose language or a specialized language for Physics/Astronomy jobs?

It depends on your specific career goals. If you are interested in pursuing a career in research, a general-purpose language like Python or C++ would be more beneficial as they have a wide range of applications. However, if you are interested in a specific field such as astrophysics or particle physics, learning a specialized language like IDL or Fortran may be more useful.

4. Can I learn a programming language on my own or do I need to take a course?

You can learn a programming language on your own through online resources, books, and practice. However, taking a course can provide structured learning and guidance from an experienced instructor. It can also offer opportunities for hands-on projects and collaboration with peers.

5. How long does it take to learn a programming language for Physics/Astronomy jobs?

The time it takes to learn a programming language depends on your dedication and previous experience with coding. With consistent practice and effort, you can learn the basics of a language in a few weeks. However, mastering a language and its applications may take several months to a year.
