Graduate Understanding the Mathematics Behind Height-Height Correlation Function
Hi, Have just been reading a paper which talks about a 'height-height correlation function' of a surface. Doesn't provide any equations, but as far as I can make out it seems to be a way of reducing the topography of the surface to a small number of characteristic parameters, which makes sense...- arwelbath

Undergrad Equilibrium constant always valid?
Thanks Bystander. The reason I ask is that this very often seems to be done. I could ref a number of DSC papers (for example) where people study coupled reversible and irreversible processes, and interpret the thermodynamics of the reversible process using that expression for the free energy in...- arwelbath

Undergrad Equilibrium constant always valid?
Thanks, but didn't frame my question quite right. What I mean is that is the relationship (DG = -RTln(K)) always true even if it isn't an isolated equilibrium? Is it okay for closed and open systems too?- arwelbath

Undergrad Equilibrium constant always valid?
DG = -RTln(K) always valid? Hi, For a reaction at equilibrium, A<==>B, then the free energy can be defined as DG = -RTln(K), where K = [B]/[A]. This is fine for an isolated equilibrium. But suppose that the system is not isolated so that A<==>B--->C for example, or if is part some even...- arwelbath

Graduate Non linear curve fit - parameter accuracy
Hi, Suppose i fit some data with a curve, using Levenberg-Marquardt (or equivalent). How do I estimate the accuracy of the parameters (by this i mean p plus or minus something). I've read somewhere that its done using the jacobian and covariance matricies I think, but not sure. Anyone know if...- arwelbath

Graduate Thermodynamics of protein folding
I've been stuck on problems like this too. Here's how I'm thinking about it at the moment... For our protein, let's say that we are discussing the free energy difference between the states. Generally we'd think of it as DG = DH - tDS. So for a given transformation of the system, the direction...- arwelbath

Graduate Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics: Coupled Chemical Reactions
Need a good book... On non-equilibrium thermodynamics, particulary of chemical reactions. More specifically still, coupled chemical reactions in open systems. Had a look around our library and most we have seem to be pre-occupied mainly with engineering (engines, electric currents etc). Any...- arwelbath

Graduate Can Gibbs Free Energy Be Defined for Irreversible Processes?
Hi, I'm working on a problem of the thermal stability of a protein. Conventionlly, people compare protein thermal stability in terms of the Gibbs free energy difference between the native and unfolded state. So if it reversibly falls apart, then for N <==> U, DG(N-U) is accessed from the...- arwelbath
