Flywheel design. Inertia dyno for 745 KW engine.

mfb: Thank you for your reply, i guess that these are the facts and i'll have to face them and consider "bending" some requirements.

Flywheel design. Inertia dyno for 745 KW engine.

Hello again, I am currently designing a flywheel for a 745 KW engine inertia dyno. Basically my design requirements are so: Max RPM: 530 RPM (=55.5 rad/s) Flywheel Diameter: 1.7 meters Time needed to accelerate: 60 second (to max rpm) I need help determining the mass of the...

    Book suggestion, Mech Eng. Handbook

Thanks both for your replies; I guess that i want to "pop my book cherry" so the first one i want to purchase is going to be something a bit more general and not quit specific, something that will cover a range of topics and give good a sense of direction. Both of you mentioned the Machinery's...

    Book suggestion, Mech Eng. Handbook

Thanks for your replay Danger. I can't afford both, they range from 130-200 bucks a piece.. That sure isn't cheap. And they are both pretty general books, they don't go down to small resolutions or exotic subjects such as a FEA or Heat Transfer books that cover the entire (or most) of the topic ..

    Book suggestion, Mech Eng. Handbook

Hello, I just recently finished my mechanical engineering studies and I'm looking for an all around handbook that will help refresh my memory and find a general good paths to solving engineering problems. I have two books in mind and i would like an opinion on which one is more useful (both...

How Effective Is Chebyshev's Linkage for Precision in Gripper Mechanisms?

Both designs are based on rotary movement converted to linear motion. You may think of using a linear actuator (Pneumatic or Hydraulic) to drive your design in some sort of scissor motion.. Just a thought..

How can a single electrical motor control a robot? or even a mechanical arm?

I'm guessing that with a clever enough set of gears and mechanisms you can make a robot that can preform mechanical movement which can consist of movements in a few directions and speeds using a single motor. Like those toy robots that walk and stuff, of course they have no control system and...

What's the part called that converts motor power into electricity?

Whats the difference? An alternator is a small generator isn't it?

Coolant & Air Flow Rate: Finding the Car's Rates

That would matter but what you need is a close estimation, take all those things to consideration and get a close approximation. I think that getting a 100 percent accurate calculation is very difficult because of all these factors that constantly change and depend on lots of other constantly...

Coolant & Air Flow Rate: Finding the Car's Rates

hmmm. What are you building? perhaps you can calculate the speed of your vehicle and determine the air velocity through that? Then just calculate the size needed for sufficient heat transfer with all the values you know. This will give you a good ground for an estimated size.

Coolant & Air Flow Rate: Finding the Car's Rates

This graph covers most cars. The paragraph written on the upper right side states what letter represents what type of engine. Each engine type has a line or a range and according to your Engine Speed you derive the coolant heat flow/ brake power ratio. Using this ratio- follow the instructions...

Coolant & Air Flow Rate: Finding the Car's Rates

Attached is a graph that has the coolant heat flow rate divided by brake HP. I took the revs that make the most power (from dyno test) and got a value (0.95). It depends on the engine type as seen on the right corner. Once you have the value place your engines brake Power (in KW) and compute the...

Steam, preesure and water flow project. I Cant understand the behavior.(+Movie)

Hello again, I continued working on my project and i had quit a bit of progress. I achieved a full work cycle and was able to bring both water levels to the same hight (changed the piping to a bigger diameter). Movie link...

Car engine component standards. Where can i find?

xxChrisxx, I understand what you mean and it makes sense. Although I'm trying to find some sort of safety factor or some work cycles minimum for car engine components. Like i mentioned I know that in aviation these things are very clear and easy to find. This will be my starting point and from...

Car engine component standards. Where can i find?

Thanks for the response, I understand the basic principles of basic machine design (like you mentioned- time life, fatigue and stresses. I just thought that there would be some standards when designing car components like there are when designing buildings, planes and elevators, and that these...
