UK student wanting to do PhD in the US
Ok well thanks for the civil response, the whole process is of course a learning curve for me, moving past my possibly very inaccurate statement it seems that the general consensus is that UK students simply don't go to grad school in the US out of inconvenience? I mean aside from the GRE, the...- CMBR

UK student wanting to do PhD in the US
Right, where did I say league tables matter for research? For all I know people reading this thread have never heard of ICL in their life... If the research group is relevant then that is where I will do research, but as far as I'm aware universities are biased towards potential candidates based...- CMBR

UK student wanting to do PhD in the US
Thanks for the useful response, if anyone else has experiences that can be added to this it would be appreciated, this is probably the only thing that would deter me from PhD'ing in the US, but just to put it into perspective Imperial College is regarded as the 3rd best University in Europe...- CMBR

UK student wanting to do PhD in the US
Well bank or no bank it doesn't really matter, either way I already mentioned why I need to take a year out between masters and PhD in my original post and if I am going to take that year off regardless I see no reason as to why making some decent money during the process is a bad thing, and my...- CMBR

UK student wanting to do PhD in the US
Nope, grad programs in the UK don't require GRE or any standardised test for that matter. I'm open to considering other universities in the US but unless I am likely to have a chance at an Ivy league or stanford/MIT I'm likely to just stay in the UK out of convenience as there are still other...- CMBR

UK student wanting to do PhD in the US
So first I will lay out my background, I am about to start QFFF (Masters) at Imperial College in the UK, I graduated from my undergraduate degree with a strong first class honours which I believe is a 4.0 GPA in the US (top 10% of my class) and first class project (from which I will be getting...- CMBR

How is the Laplacian Applied to Retarded Potential?
Homework Statement See attachment. Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution I'm not understanding how the laplacian is creating those 3 terms in 5.4.5. I just understand the basics that laplacian on f(x,y) = d2f/dx2 + d2f/dy2. Can someone elaborate? Thanks in advance. EDIT: Just...- CMBR

What are the main differences between Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics?
Homework Statement So I just learned how to derive the equation of motion under the Lagrangian formulation which involves finding the euler-lagrange equation when setting the change in action to zero, chain rule, integration by parts etc.. Then I learned how to find the equations of motion...- CMBR

Solving Summations: Tips & Tricks for Homework
Yeh I sort of came to a similar conclusion myself, the issue was that I didn't get why you can use the notation \sum_{ab}^{} if you neglect particle self interactions, the notation in that case is not strictly true then? Wouldn't it be better to keep it in the form \sum_{a}^{}(\sum_{b\neq...- CMBR

Solving Summations: Tips & Tricks for Homework
yeh I got that but once you insert 2.1.1 i don't get how the summation in front of the red dot term is \sum_{ab}^{} once you sub 2.1.1 you get \sum_{a}^{}(\sum_{b\neq a}^{}), I don't really understand how that works- CMBR

Solving Summations: Tips & Tricks for Homework
Homework Statement See the attachment, I am stuck as to how the summation sign \sum_{b\neq a}^{} in (2.1.1) ends up as \sum_{ab}^{} in the term with the red dot above (2.1.5). Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution As I understand you end up taking the product of two summations such...- CMBR

Derivation eqn motion particle rotating frame
Homework Statement So this isn't a homework problem but I don't know where else I am supposed to post for general help. I am basically trying to understand the derivation for the equation of motion of a particle in a rotating frame. See attachment for derivation and which steps I am stuck on...- CMBR
