Undergrad Why do riders hang off a motorbike when cornering?
Hi, I was wondering why some riders lean their body off a bike into the corner when cornering? (a more extreme case being knee almost touching the floor for example) The general explanation I get from riders more or less is this: When you lean your body off a bike, the bike has to lean less...- ihateblackbox

Critical points of multivariable equations
Homework Statement Find all critical points of u(x,y)=(x-y)(x^2+y^2-1) Homework Equations - The Attempt at a Solution Partial differentials: ux=3x^2+y^2-1-2xy=0 uy=-x^2-3y^2+2xy+1=0 I know the critical points are the solutions to the above two equations. But how do...- ihateblackbox

Graduate How does magnetization affect the magnetic field around a bar magnet?
Hi. I am trying to figure this out. I figure it'd be best to do with an example. Say we have a bar magnet, N and S poles. Surrounded by vacuum with μ=μ0. CASE 1: Then. We put a high permeability material μr x just to the left of the magnet say. Now, from what I have been taught I...- ihateblackbox

Rectangular coil rotating in magnetic field
Homework Statement A rectangular coil of 80 turns has an area of 0.01m^2. It rotates @ 3000rpm about one of its in plane axes, in a uniform magnetic field having B=1.5T. Calculate the rms voltage generated. Homework Equations 1 Tesla= 1 Weber/m^2. Change in flux of 1 Weber per second...- ihateblackbox

Undergrad Why is the magnetic field around a piece of wire circular?
I am trying to understand how exactly electric and magnetic fields work. So far this is my understanding. A particle which has charge has an electric field around it. If the charged particle moves, it forms a magnetic field with its force lines perpendicular to direction of the movement...- ihateblackbox

Undergrad The Mystery of Voltage Increase & Current Decrease
Listen sir, firstly, I didn't mean to offend you so I am sorry if I did. The problem I have is that although I have understood the equations, I don't really understand the theory behind them. Its a bit like I know 1+1=2 but I don't know why its so. So I take a different approach, break...- ihateblackbox

Undergrad Fundamental and basic physics questions on flux lines
OK, yes this clears up a lot. Just one more thing; when you say "bound" referring to electrons in the iron bar, do you mean one of the delocalised electrons or one of the electrons in orbit around the nucleus of Fe atoms (ions?). If you didn't mean delocalised electrons, why don't they attract...- ihateblackbox

Undergrad Fundamental and basic physics questions on flux lines
This may possibly be true, but I want the most simple explanation, in terms of what is happening, because I find it easier to visualise in my mind, and the easier I can make it, the more I will, but not any simpler. When I am explained to in terms of equations, I don't really understand much...- ihateblackbox

Undergrad Fundamental and basic physics questions on flux lines
Ok, what you are saying confuses me and contradicts my understanding. Let me reiterate and please correct me if I am going wrong somewhere; by attraction I mean if a magnet is brought next to a piece of wire, the electrons in it try to move to minimize the effect of the magnetic field. If they...- ihateblackbox

Undergrad The Mystery of Voltage Increase & Current Decrease
Thanks for your reply and for your time, but I am looking for a more basic explanation. You explained it in terms of equations which is what I don't want. I want to know exactly why this happens. I have been thinking more and I think (correct me if I'm wrong, please) that as there are more...- ihateblackbox

Undergrad The Mystery of Voltage Increase & Current Decrease
I mean, If an ideal step up transformer increases the voltage from 10V to 20V say, why does the current halve? I know it happens and I know the equations for it, I know to say otherwise would contradict the law that energy cannot be created. But putting the equations aside, why exactly...- ihateblackbox

Undergrad Fundamental and basic physics questions on flux lines
One fundamental question is still yet to be answered. How does magnetic induction exactly work? In the case of a magnet next to a piece of wire, is it that the charges are attracted/repelled by the magnetic field and so move position? And this is why AC creates a current because the charges are...- ihateblackbox
