How Does Reciprocating Motion Affect Alternator Efficiency?
Hi guys, Currently just looking through a few concepts for wave energy converters and I noticed that a few designs use bi-directional rotating turbines (or linear action) meaning the alternator has to continuously keep rotating in one direction, stopping, rotating in the other direction...- JJ21

Can a Valve Create a Time Lag and Prevent Water Mixing in a Pipe System?
Hi guys, Right, here is the situation. Consider a long coil of pipe containing water with a thermostatic valve at the outlet and a valve (this is the valve in question) at the inlet. The inlet is gravity fed by a large reservoir of water and the question is this: as the water leaves the...- JJ21

What Type of Valve Should I Use to Control Water Flow in a Heating Process?
Brilliant, thanks for you help. Just to maybe complicate this a little bit further, instead of a single cubic container it was a long coil pipe. Is there any way to calibrate the valve in order to let the water flow from the pipe through the outlet thermostatic valve while introducing a delay...- JJ21

What Type of Valve Should I Use to Control Water Flow in a Heating Process?
Hi all, Right, this may be a bit hard to explain but I'll do my best. Hopefully attached is a sketch of the situation. The water flows from the tank into the "rigid container" through valve (1). This tank is then heated until the water reaches boiling at which point the thermostatic valve...- JJ21

Calculating Shear Rate in Rotating Cylinder
Hi, I'm trying to get an expression for the shear rate in a rotating cylinder (as pictured) in terms of the inner cylinder radius, outside cylinder radius and angular velocity. The inside cylinder remains fixed and only the outer cylinder rotates. Assume that the distance x is small. Any...- JJ21

Precise linear motion output from rotary input
Thanks for the ideas! I've been researching how to vary the stroke length of a slider-crank mechanism and have found a few methods but no "practical" solution of how the slider-crank could be adjusted in real life for example the slider-crank mechanism attached below. Any ideas? Thanks- JJ21

Precise linear motion output from rotary input
Sorry, by linear oscillatory motion i meant reciprocating motion. It would be over several fixed ranges from 1mm to 3mm for example.- JJ21

Precise linear motion output from rotary input
Hi, I need to get a precise linear oscillatory motion from a rotary input? Its for a compact carving tool. Any ideas on how to control the displacement? Thnks- JJ21

Fluid Mechanics: Upstream Pressure Distribution
A few things I don't quite get... about why the surface pressure distribution UPSTREAM of the separation point of a body is different to the theoretical or ideal distribution...? I can see why there will be a difference between the theoretical static pressure distribution but not why the...- JJ21
