Undergrad Can the Method of Loci Be Effective for Memorizing Math Theorems and Proofs?
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I have recently 'discovered' the memory palace or method of loci technique(s) myself. I see great promise in retention for mathematical problem solving...in fact a colleague and myself are working on a technique to extend this memory retention technique for...- Liquid7800

Correct Algebraic Manipulation of Partial Derivative Operations
so is this like a similar identity to (a+b)^2 == a^2 +2ab + b^2 ? and in the same way could it be extended to (a+b)^n ...?- Liquid7800

Correct Algebraic Manipulation of Partial Derivative Operations
Thanks Mark, However perhaps I wasnt as clear as I needed to be... I know that: f_{xy} = \frac{\partial}{\partial y}f_x = 2 and ...what I meant was re-arranging the ORDER of partial differentiation with respect to the 'respective' variable: Not...- Liquid7800

Correct Algebraic Manipulation of Partial Derivative Operations
Ive never been one to BUMP a thread but, I really would like to know if operations on problems like these are 'legal'----I mean do these type of problems follow the elementary algebraic operations? In addition, let me know if my question does not make sense. Thanks again.- Liquid7800

Correct Algebraic Manipulation of Partial Derivative Operations
Homework Statement Hello, recently in my calculus III class we went over some problems of the following form: If 'for some given equation' show: [FONT="Book Antiqua"][SIZE="5"]x(f[SIZE="2"]x) +y(f[SIZE="2"]xy) +f[SIZE="2"]x= 0 For some examples I was playing around with the operations...- Liquid7800

What's the Best Self-Study Plan for Advanced Math After Basic Courses?
I agree with stevenb, I didnt even 'know' about differential forms approach until I started playing around with the operations and then was led to the area(s) of advanced calculus- Liquid7800

Graduate Which is more difficult: pure or applied mathematics?
I think thinking of new (unsolved), practical/applied problems or pioneering/discovering a new pure mathematics field require equal amounts of creativity, computer science ties very closely between the two fields. No matter the field though----someone on these forums said it somewhere a while...- Liquid7800

What's the Best Self-Study Plan for Advanced Math After Basic Courses?
Hello, I really respect what you are going for...I am going for a pure math higher education goal, and I realize you need to somewhat specialize sometime, so I want to also learn very specific subject areas along the way---and to do that I may have to do it on my own. In terms of a math...- Liquid7800

Multivariate Optimization and Area/Volume homework check
Thanks Dick, Its always the little stuff that gets me, thanks for the explanation---I don't know how I missed that either in hindsight- Liquid7800

Multivariate Optimization and Area/Volume homework check
Let me see, by this hint I should also have (-1,-1) and (-5,3) as well as (-1,3) and (-5,-1) as these are the total possible combination's of the four points on this xy plane?- Liquid7800

Multivariate Optimization and Area/Volume homework check
Thanks for the reply Dick...however, all I can say is maybe regarding the polynomials for Fx and Fy x=0 and y=0 as well?, thus getting another critical point (0,0)? But I don't see how to find four though? I feel I am missing something here.- Liquid7800

Multivariate Optimization and Area/Volume homework check
I am sorry Mark...I guess I didnt realize how difficult these might actually be for you all to check over. I have taken down a couple in response,...I will take this into consideration in the future for other homework checks ...if anyone would like to take a stab at at least one...please...- Liquid7800

Multivariate Optimization and Area/Volume homework check
Homework Statement Hello, If you don’t mind, would you all be able to look over these problems for me? I have left out much of the ‘algebra’ work for the sake of space…so please let me know if you think there are any algebra errors. In addition I am particularly looking to see if I have set...- Liquid7800

Work Check On a Complicated Partial Derivative
Homework Statement Hello, I was given this complicated partial derivative to work out: z = √( 1-( (x+y)/(xy) )2 ) + arcsin (x+y)/(x-y) find: [SIZE="4"]fx and [SIZE="4"]fy and this is my final answer taking the partial derivative with respect to 'x' only right now...which is...- Liquid7800
