Can the Sun be treated as a black body radiator?

Ohh yes i see. I've only just realized that I am using the "Stefan Boltzman BLACK BODY Law" (i assumed that was the lumonosity for any body). So by using this law and getting a ridicolous answer, one of the assumptions for using the law must be wrong - ie the body is not a black body. Cheers

Can the Sun be treated as a black body radiator?

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, its given. I calculated the luminosity of the corona to be 1.38 x10^32 The value of the solar luminosity is given as 3.9 x10^26 - then what? That it can't be treated as a black body...? Not really sure

Can the Sun be treated as a black body radiator?

Hello, I am trying to revise for my Solar System exam and going through a past paper i have a question relating to something that we don't seem to have covered: "By estimating the energy output of the Sun's corona (in watts), comment on whether can be treated as a blackbody radiator...

Fourier Series of a constant (Pi)?

Homework Statement Determine the Fourier series of f(x) = pi + x Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution I see you have to calculate the two "series" separately and then add them. I know that the Fourier series of pi is just pi - but i was wondering why (i know that sounds...

Finding the eigenvectors of a 3x3 matrix - help please

One last question. The next part of the problem reads: "Find a matrix R such that RAR^{T} = D, where D is a diagonal matrix (i.e., a matrix whose non-zero entries are all on the main diagonal)." The answers say its just a matrix of the eigenvectors I've just found - why? Thanks

Finding the eigenvectors of a 3x3 matrix - help please

Perfect. So i could just have said x3 = 5, but then when i normalised it id get "one over the square root of 5 squared = 1/5)" and so just back to the (0 0 1) vector. That makes sense! Thanks alot. This was driving me mad but I've got it all straight in my head now. Thanks again.

Finding the eigenvectors of a 3x3 matrix - help please

Thanks again vela for your continued support - i really appreciate it. Ive had another go this morning on this problem and i see last night what i was doing was inserting x2=1 prematurely (in the original vector before i had actually expanded out the equations). Everything works well with the...

Finding the eigenvectors of a 3x3 matrix - help please

Thank you for your continued help. I know see that was a somewhat silly question. I have been going through the original question trying the various methods avaliable. Using http://www.arndt-bruenner.de/mathe/scripts/engl_eigenwert.htm" I know that: Characteristic polynomial...

Finding the eigenvectors of a 3x3 matrix - help please

THANK YOU! That was exactly what i have been looking for and have spent the better half of the past 4 hours trying to find. In textbooks i see "and now we set this to one" and no explanation as to why. It all makes sense now! Im not having any troubles generally with finding eigenvectors -...

Finding the eigenvectors of a 3x3 matrix - help please

    Homework Statement Determine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matric, A: A=\left[\begin{array}{ccc}1 & 1 & 0\\ 1 & -2 & 0\\ 0 & 0 & 1\end{array} Homework Equations I think i understand what is going on. I have found the matrix equation to be...

Best undergrad Electricity & Magnetism (E&M) Text Book?

Thanks for the replies. Ill see if i can get a hold of a copy of Halliday & Resnick as, from looking at the contents on amazon, i think it seems most suited to this course. Im pretty sure this was a first year course last year, but moved to second year for timetabling, so i think it should be...

Best undergrad Electricity & Magnetism (E&M) Text Book?

Hello, Im struggling with a pretty horrendous lecturer for this 2nd year course, so am trying to learn a lot of it myself with a decent textbook. I am getting pretty scared for the exam in summer. We have been reccomended Jewett & Serway, but its kinda just a general physics, and doesn't seem...

What is the resistivity of paper?

Hello, What we have to do is design an experiment to find the resistivity of paper, easy enough. But to check our results we need to find the "official" value of what the resistivity of paper is. (The resisitivity is a constant and measured in Ohm Metres, Zapper) For example the...
