Momentum 4 Vector Notation: Differences Explained

Thanks for answering. My homework exercises starts with P = (E/c, p), but suddenly they started to use P = (E, pc). Not only that, they use a different convention than my textbook uses for many of the formulas. So I cannot hep it but get confused time to time

Momentum 4 Vector Notation: Differences Explained

Thanks for answering :) Regarding equation 3, it is actually from my homework in modern physics. I had to use this equation to solve a comptom scattering problem made by my professor. But it is just like you said, it also does not make any sense to me...

Momentum 4 Vector Notation: Differences Explained

I have noticed three ways to write the momentum 4 vectors i. P = (E/c, p) ii. P = (E, p) iii. P = (E, pc) The three ways to write the momentum 4 vectors is really confusing since I know how to derive the way it is written in the form as (i). But the two other forms (ii and iii) does not make...

How close can two protons get if....

Ah of course, it is supposed to be 1/r, that means that the calculations are completely off

How close can two protons get if....

No, the problem does not talk about velocities comparable to light...basically I was just trying something since the units matched...the chapter mentions the rest energy of a proton (E=mc2) so I just gave it a shot

How close can two protons get if....

The equation was just put together from the equation for "thermal energy and rest energy" = "potential energy" the k's on the left hand side is not the same on the right hand side LHS k=1,38065*10-23 J/K RHS k=8,99*109 Nm2/C2

How close can two protons get if....

Yes this is the complete problem statement I tried to solve the problem like this: 3/2kT + mc2=k(e2/r2), solving for r gave r=1.2*10-9, which is like 1000 order bigger than the correct answer :(

I am student aiming to become a teacher in math and physics

Thanks :) I would also like to teach at a university one day in the future but I am setting my goals low a the moment My goal for the autumn semester this year is to become a teaching assistant :)

How close can two protons get if....

Aha, I think I understand now, that means that all the kinetic energy becomes potential energy when the electron are at the closest approach...thank you :) Yes, this is homework (I realized that this should be posted at the homework section after posting. I am sorry for posting here)

How close can two protons get if....

Mentor note: Thread got moved to the homework section How close can two protons get if one is at rest and the other has a kinetic energy equal to the average energy at T =107 K? I know that the kinetic energy of the moving proton is 3/2kT, but what is the kinetic energy of the proton at rest...

I am student aiming to become a teacher in math and physics

Hi I am a student who already have a master degree in engineering (Materials Science and Engineering). I somehow couldn't find a job which suited me after my graduation as an engineer so therefore I decided to become a teacher (which was something I also would prefer before I chose to become a...
