How Are Theta_1 and Theta_2 Related in Suspended Charged Spheres?
Homework Statement 2 small spheres of charge "q" suspended from strings of length "l" are connected at a common point. one sphere has mass m, the other 2m. Assume angles theta_1 and theta_2 that strings make with vertical are small. (a) how are theta_1 and theta_2 related? (b) show that the...- redbeard

Turbulent flow, verifying a general DE solution
Hey Mindscrape, Thanks for the reply :). It turned out I did have the knowledge to solve that DE. I assumed it wasn't separable because when i fed it into Wolfram, Wolfram proceeded to vomit. I guess I shouldn't assume Wolfram is so high and mighty such that if it can't do it then I can't...- redbeard

Turbulent flow, verifying a general DE solution
Homework Statement Consider a metal sphere of radius r, drag coefficient C, density p_s falling in a fluid p and viscosity n. Find the acceleration: I found this to be g - p/p_s * g - (3C/(8*p_s*r))*v^2. Others were in agreeal with this so take it as given. ***Show that your result has...- redbeard

Tapping a steel rod with a hammer-standing waves
Yes, but that doesn't quite explain it for me. Why are the ends anti-nodes? Like if you think of longitudinal waves in an air tube being made at one end and going towards an open end, the pressure difference at the open end is 0 and so the displacement is at a max (an anti-node). This makes...- redbeard

Tapping a steel rod with a hammer-standing waves
Homework Statement so the rod is of length l, and the speed of a transverse wave is v_w. It asks for the possible frequencies f_i. The rod is held in the centre so a node exists here.Homework Equations look below The Attempt at a SolutionI know that v_w = \lambda * f_i So it follows that i...- redbeard

Physics or Mathematical Physics: Which Major Should I Choose?
So I want to go into physics at waterloo university, but I'm stuck with deciding whether I should take physics, or mathematical physics. Mathematical physics seems to be the major in which I'll learn all that beautiful theoretical stuff that I've read about in books (ex: the elegant...- redbeard
